    • A downhole component comprising a tube comprising an upset adapted for the passage of a transmission line. The tube of the downhole component further comprises an inside diameter, and the downhole component further comprises an elongate, generally cylindrical tool joint comprising a wall and a first interfacial surface. The upset is formed on an end of the tube and comprises a second interfacial surface and an effective inside diameter less than the inside diameter of the tube. The tool joint is attached to the upset on the tube at the first and second interfacial surfaces, and an opening formed within the wall of the tool joint is aligned with a passageway formed in the upset. The opening and the passageway cooperate to allow passage of a transmission line between the tool joint and the tube. The passageway in the upset may be formed at the time the upset is formed or afterwards.

    • An apparatus in a drill string comprises an internally upset drill pipe. The drill pipe comprises a first end, a second end, and an elongate tube intermediate the first and second ends. The elongate tube and the ends comprising a continuous an inside surface with a plurality of diameters. A conformable metal tube is disposed within the drill pipe intermediate the ends thereof and terminating adjacent to the ends of the drill pipe. The conformable metal tube substantially conforms to the continuous inside surface of the metal tube. The metal tube may comprise a non-uniform section which is expanded to conform to the inside surface of the drill pipe. The non-uniform section may comprise protrusions selected from the group consisting of convolutions, corrugations, flutes, and dimples. The non-uniform section extends generally longitudinally along the length of the tube. The metal tube may be adapted to stretch as the drill pipes stretch.

    • A pair of opposing drive heads are positioned in a storage media drive to read and/or write a storage media interposed therebetween. Each drive head has a sensor face that includes first and second parallel longitudinally extending air-bearing surfaces. Each air-bearing surface has generally longitudinally opposing leading and trailing terminations. The storage media travels adjacent the sensor face in a traveling direction extending along the air-bearing surfaces from the leading to the trailing terminations. A drive sensor is positioned on the first air-bearing surface a distance D1 from the trailing termination thereof. The trailing termination of the second air-bearing surface extends farther a distance D2 in the traveling direction than the trailing termination of the first air-bearing surface. The drive heads are opposingly positioned such that each first air-bearing surface is opposed by the second air-bearing surface of the opposite drive head, and such that the leading and trailing terminations of the drive heads oppose each other. Each drive sensor is overlaid by the second air-bearing surface of the opposite drive head when the drive heads are aligned with respect to the traveling direction. Each drive sensor remains overlaid by such second air-bearing surface when the drive heads are mis-aligned with respect to the traveling direction by as much as the sum of D1 and D2.

    • Apparatus and method for counting the number of inserts pulled each cycle from each hopper of an inserting machine. The caliper is a precision mechanism for accurately counting single, double, triple, quadruple and even quintuple fed inserts as well as misses. The caliper system compensates for a wide range of variables and countered in conventional newspaper inserting machines operating at 400 cycles per minute. The set-up of the caliper system is highly simplified due to the system software which, in addition to while proving a learn zero and learn insert mode, further recognizes operational variables which occur during operations such as fluctuation of paper basis weight and ink build up on the caliper wheel. The system provides self-checks to verify operational accuracy.
