    • Colors are associated with source locators such as URLs that identify sources found by a search, in order to enable a searcher to see at a glance how closely the search results match keywords that convey the searcher's intended search criteria. A browser prompts keyword entry, reads the keywords, associates colors with the keywords to form a color code, and displays a color code map that explains the color code to the searcher. The browser sends the keywords to a search engine. The search engine performs a search, and sends to the browser source locators that identify sources of interest such as web pages, along with occurrence data indicative of how often each of the keywords appears in each of the sources. For each source locator, the browser formulates a correlation indicator, which includes a visual area that is colored according to the color code and the occurrence data for occurrence of each keyword. The browser displays links to the sources and the associated correlation indicators to the searcher.

    • A web server computer system includes a virus checker and mechanisms for checking e-mails and their attachments, downloaded files, and web sites for possible viruses. When an e-mail message contains a detected virus, the message is discarded, and both the sender and recipient are informed via e-mail that the message contained a virus. When an e-mail attachment contains a detected virus, the attachment is deleted, and the e-mail message without the attachment is sent to the web client, along with a message explaining that the e-mail message had an attachment that was automatically deleted because it had a virus. When a downloaded file contains a virus, the downloaded file is deleted, and an error message is sent to the web client to inform the web client that the requested file had a virus. When a requested web site (i.e., Uniform Resource Locator (or URL)) has been labeled as a source for a known virus, a message is sent to the web client stating that a virus may have been downloaded from that URL. In addition, if the requested URL has not been labeled as a source for a known virus, but it contains links that have been so labeled, the web page is processed before being sent to the user to identify those potentially dangerous links. In this manner a web server can perform virus checking of different types of information real-time as the information is requested by a web client. In addition, a web client may also request that the server perform virus checking on a particular drive on the web client. If this case, the web server may receive information from the web client drive, scan the information for viruses, and inform the web client whether any viruses were found. In the alternative, the web server may download a client virus checker to the web client and cause the client virus checker to be run on the web client. The preferred embodiments thus allow a virus checker on a web server to dynamically scan incoming data, and to scan web clients coupled to the web server, thereby eliminating the need for virus checking software to be installed on each web client.

    • A method of electronically conveying information using a first electronic document having a selectable link embedded therein (e.g., a hypertext link), wherein at least one presentation attribute is associated with the link, by presenting a second (linked) electronic document using the presentation attribute, in response to selection of the link. In the illustrative embodiment, a sender of an e-mail message embeds the link in the message and associates the particular presentation attributes. The presentation attributes are encoded into the message, and are thus sent with the message across a network such as the Internet. The presentation attributes may be associated with the link by capturing current settings, or by specifying custom settings. In this manner, when the recipient of the message selects the link, a web browser is launched, and uses the appropriate environmental attributes to present the linked web page. The recipient has the ability to selectively override sender-defined attributes.

    • An apparatus, program product, and method automate the selection of audio broadcast signals based upon a user preference criterion, typically by receiving a first audio broadcast signal from a first source, and concurrently monitoring a second source to locate a second audio broadcast signal matching a user preference criterion. The user preference criterion may represent a particular type of song, program, artist, genre, etc., or in the alternative may represent one or more specific programs, songs, etc. By monitoring for sources that match the user preference criterion concurrently with receiving a signal from a first source, automation of the selection of matching audio broadcast signals (e.g., by notifying a user of a match, automatically selecting a matching audio broadcast signal, etc.) is greatly facilitated.

    • A cordless communication and control device has a handset that includes communications equipment and remote control equipment. The communications equipment provides cordless telephone functionality, and the remote control equipment provides for remote control of one or more entertainment appliances. The handset also includes a mode controller in communication with the communications equipment and the remote control equipment. The mode controller provides at least one convenience mode. When a convenience mode is active, the mode controller responds to detection of an incoming call by automatically limiting utilization of the communications equipment and/or one or more entertainment appliances, based on the active convenience mode. In a first embodiment, the cordless communication and control device automatically limits the utilization by automatically preventing the communications equipment from producing an audible indication of the incoming call. In a second embodiment, the cordless communication and control device limits the utilization by automatically causing the remote control equipment to reduce the volume of an entertainment appliance.

    • Control over the output of duplex or double-sided copying is facilitated by indicator pages identifying an original page which should be copied to the front side of a new copy page, even if the back side of a previous copy page must be left blank in order to do so. Special separator pages containing detectable indicia such as a bar code may be inserted within single-side originals immediately prior to a page which should be printed on the front side of a duplex copy page to serve as the indicator page. Pages with unique, detectable content such as white space followed by large-print chapter or section headings may be employed as the indicator page, identifying the respective page as a page which should be printed on the front side of a new duplex copy page. Special dual-form separator pages containing different detectable indicia identifying either the front or back of a subsequent duplex original page may be employed to start each new chapter or section within a duplex original on a new page within the copy even if some chapters or sections within the original start on the back of a page, Indicator pages may also alter copy characteristics such as darkness and enlargement/reduction for the respective identified pages.

    • A debugger inserts instrumentation hooks in a multi-threaded computer program that allow collecting a program trace and that provide timestamps that correspond to the program trace. When a breakpoint in a first thread is encountered, a timestamp corresponding to the breakpoint is retrieved. Execution of the other threads may continue until the debugger is able to halt their execution. Once the execution of all threads has been halted, the program trace for each thread is traced backwards to a point where the timestamp is less than the breakpoint timestamp. Instructions are then executed, one by one, until the execution time of the instructions plus the timestamp is approximately the same as the breakpoint timestamp. The instruction in the program trace display is then highlighted to indicate the instruction that was likely being executed when the breakpoint in the first thread is encountered.

    • An automated way to detect differences in the values of program variables/expressions and the order of execution between one run and another. A collection mode saves the values of expressions/variables at collection points in the program. On a subsequent execution during the detection mode, these saved values of the same expressions/variables are recalled and compared with the current values. Advantageously, the user selects the collection points within the program at which variable information can be gathered and compared; and these collection points may include: breakpoints set by a debugging program or by the user; collection points set by the user, and entry and/or exit points and/or points within program structures, such as procedure calls, control blocks, etc. Setup of the collection mode includes the capability to modify the expressions/variables, the tolerance or the acceptable alternatives, and the position and number of collection points.
