    • A method determines the absolute position of a pointer in an indicating device in which the pointer is moved by a rotor (2) of a rotating-field (1) via a gearing (31). An indicating device is also disclosed. Indicating devices with gearing have the problem that no absolute reference between the position of the pointer (33) and the position of the rotor (2) in the rotating-field motor (1) is present when the device is started and the reference is lost. In order to restore the reference, the pointer (33) is moved by a rotating field in a rotating-field motor (1) in a predetermined direction of the rotating field against a stop (34). The rotating field is turned further in the direction of the rotating field. A signal induced in the field-generating part (4, 5) of the rotating-field motor by a movement of the rotor (2) contrary to the direction of the rotating field is detected, and from the angular position of the rotating field upon the occurrence of the induced signal, the angular position of the rotor at which the pointer rests against the stop is determined.

    • There is disclosed a digital enhancement circuit which responds to the complementary inductance provided by a planar coil sensor which inductance varies in a complementary manner according to the position of a movable member associated with the planar coil configuration. The complementary inductance is coupled to an oscillator whereby the period of the oscillator is varied in a first mode according to a first inductance value and in a second mode according to a second inductance value. These signals are then processed by means of digital processing circuitry to develop a signal indicative of the difference of the periods as divided by the sum of the periods. This signal is a ratiometric signal, and by employing digital counters, one can provide an output signal having a predetermined gain factor and having the above noted ratiometric characteristic which signal is indicative of the position of the movable member as further enhanced by the gain factor.

    • A position sensor for producing a variable electrical output signal in response to manipulation of a quadrant lever or the like. A pair of tubes of equal length made of magnetically saturable material are secured to a frame in parallel proximity to a sheet-like permanent magnet which is mounted on a carrier. The magnet has a pair of active angled edges and the tubes are oriented to transversely intersect the respective angled edges, being so spaced from one another that the tubes are magnetically saturated over complementary fractions of their length. Each tube is engaged by at least one turn of wire and a detector circuit is provided having its input connected to the turns of wire for producing an electrical output signal in accordance with the differential magnetic saturation of the tubes. Each tube is angled generally transversely with respect to the direction of relative movement. In addition the presented edges of the magnet are angled at such acute angle with respect to the direction of relative movement that, upon such movement the tubes are respectively engaged by successive portions of the angled edges, so that one of the tubes is progressively more saturated in its longitudinal dimension while the remaining tube is progressively less saturated, with the degree of saturation of the tubes in the longitudinal dimension remaining substantially complementary over the range of relative movement. The acute angle is sufficiently shallow so that the range of relative movement substantially exceeds the length dimension of the tubes. The magnet has a reference position with respect to the tubes in which each tube is saturated over such portion of its longitudinal dimension as will result in a zero output signal at the reference position.

    • A measurement system for converting the outputs of dissimilar transducers into digital numbers by means of a phase conversion technique. The outputs of a plurality of dissimilar transducers are generated as pairs of amplitude modulated sinusoidal signals. All AM signal pairs are converted into phase modulated signal pairs by a plurality of identical conversion circuits where the phase difference between at least one PM signal pair is linearly related to the measured parameter of the transducer associated therewith. The phase differences for each transducer is converted into a digital number by counting increments of time between the zero crossings of each pair of phase modulated signals and outputting the resulting count to a data buss of a control processor. Transducer parameters which are nonlinearly related to their phase differences are compensated by a correction factor which is calculated by knowing the error between any particular measured input and the linear input.
