    • A rudder assembly for self-propelled water craft, and particularly for a touring kayak. A rudder member is positioned within a notch of the rear of the keel of the craft, the exterior contour of this rudder member is made to augment the contour of the rest of the kayak hull to minimize changing the pattern of water flow around the craft. The rudder member is moved using an upstanding shaft attached to a disk within a recess in the rear of the craft, this disk being provided with starboard and port cables that extend to the cockpit of the craft. Axial movement of the cables is achieved using left and right foot pedals attached to slides within fixed channels. Provision is made for the adjustment of length of the cables, and for releasably locking one or both against axial movement.

    • Device which is independent of the main propulsion system of a ship, and which can be used selectively as a passive rudder or as an active maneuvering mechanism, and consists of one or more blades, a wheel body, a transmission and one or more control units.When the wheel body is stationary, in response to commands from the control unit or units, the blades can be oriented separately by means of the transmission and can be coupled or uncoupled to set the required angle with respect to the longitudinal axis of the ship. In that case, the device acts as a passive rudder.When the wheel body is rotating, the position of the eccentrically located blade or blades is varied during a rotation of the wheel body so that a resulting thrust is generated on account of the hydrodynamic forces which act on the blade or blades. The direction of the thrust can be set in any desired direction by means of the control unit or control units and the sun wheel or the sun wheels of the transmission. In that case, the device acts as an active maneuvering mechanism.

    • The steering of a human powered pontoon aquatic vehicle is improved by arranging the pontoons in three articulated sections. The forward and aft pontoon sections are rotated in reciprocal directions with the forward sections being rotated in the direction of the desired turn. The vehicle includes a support frame attached to the forward and aft pontoon sections upon which a seat is mounted. A central frame member attached to the central pontoon is shifted laterally with respect to the support frame in order to rotated the forward and aft pontoon sections. The forward and aft pontoon sections are connected to the central pontoon section by interlocking hinges which permits convenient disassembly of the vehicle for transportation.

    • A tiller arm and steering bracket assembly where the tiller arm is pivotally coupled to the steering bracket such that it can be selectively positioned in either a generally horizontal position or a generally vertical position. The tiller arm includes an underside having interference ribs that contact the steering bracket when the tiller arm is placed in the horizontal position. The interference ribs each have a retaining ledge that supports the tiller arm on the head portion of the steering bracket in an upright position substantially perpendicular to the steering bracket when it is placed in the vertical position. The steering bracket has integral crest formations which contact the retaining ledges to provide additional support to the tiller arm when it is placed in the vertical position. A bore formed through the steering bracket accepts a retaining pin that contacts the tiller arm at a point which prevents the tiller arm from unintentionally returning to the horizontal position. Additionally, the steering bracket may have a recess and a channel formed through the steering bracket for accepting and mounting thereto a starter switch and starter mechanism.
