    • A steerable vehicle has at least one rigid axle carrying steerable wheels, a steering box secured to the axle, and an input rotatable relative to the housing of the steering box with steering control means having first and second relatively rotatable parts, a connection between the first part of the steering control means and the housing of the box having a first element arranged to take up an average position between the first part and the housing during relative rotation therebetween, and a differential gearing between the second part of the control means and the input to the steering box, the differential gearing having a second element which takes up an average position between the second part and input during relative rotation, the first and second elements being connected for simultaneous movement. This prevents steering of the wheels due to relative roll occurring between the steering box and the control means.

    • In a leading link type independent suspension system a pair of leading links are mounted for oscillating movement on the vehicle chassis. A half axle is fixed to each leading link and is pivotally connected to a stub axle by a vertical swivel pin. An assembly mounted between each link and its half axle comprises a deformable chamber disposed in parallel with an anti-roll damper, a clevis with a vertical pivot axis connecting the deformable chamber to an arm fixed to its leading link. One of the ends of each anti-roll damper is connected to its associated clevis. A connecting bar with ball joints interconnects the clevises of the pair of leading links. The half axles are blocked by pneumatic jacks during backing up movement of the vehicle. A safety microswitch controls the supply of compressed air to the deformable chamber and is mounted on each leading link for detecting pivotal movements of the associated half axle.

    • A vehicle steering system adapted to automatically compensate for twist of a wheel supporting axle in a solid axle type suspension arrangement, the steering system including a steering gear on the sprung mass portion of the vehicle, a reciprocating pitman arm on the steering gear, a pair of steering knuckles on one steerable wheel assembly spaced vertically equal distances above and below an axis defined by the solid axle, a pair of control rods attached to the steering knuckles, and a connecting link attached to the control rods and to the pitman arm. The connecting link, control rods, and steering knuckles define an articulated parallelogram the neutral plane of which contains the axle axis and the pitman arm connection so that twisting of the axle effects skewing of the parallelogram without accompanying bodily shiftable movement of the neutral plane.
