    • The invention relates to a radiation-sensitive silver halide emulsion comprisingsilver halide grains including tabular grains(a) having {111} major faces,(b) containing greater than 70 mole percent bromide, based on silver,(c) accounting for greater than 90 percent of total grain projected area,(d) exhibiting an average equivalent circular diameter of at least 0.7 .mu.m,(e) exhibiting an average thickness of less than 0.07 .mu.m, and(f) having latent image forming chemical sensitization sites on the surfaces of the tabular grains, anda spectral sensitizing dye adsorbed to the surfaces of the tabular grains,wherein the surface chemical sensitization sites include at least one silver salt epitaxially located on said tabular grains adsorbed onto said grains during grain forming or sensitizing and said emulsion further comprising at least one sulfodihydroxy aryl compound represented by the Formulas I or II ##STR1## wherein X and Y represent an SO.sub.3 group or a hydrogen with at least one of X and Y being a sulfo group.

    • Spectrally sensitized tabular grain emulsions are disclosed exhibiting (1) increased speeds and (2) contrasts and speed-granularity relationships superior to those of conventional emulsions of the same average grain sizes. The tabular grains have {111} major faces, contain greater than 80 mole percent bromide, based on silver, and are substantially free of iodide, exhibit an average aspect ratio of greater than 50 and an average equivalent circular diameter of >10 micrometers, account for greater than 90 percent of total grain projected area, and have latent image forming chemical sensitization sites on their surfaces including epitaxially deposited silver halide protrusions of a face centered cubic rock salt crystal lattice structure forming epitaxial junctions with the tabular grains. The protrusions are restricted to those portions of the tabular grains (a) located nearest peripheral edges of and (b) accounting for less than 50 percent of the {111} major faces of the tabular grains. The protrusions contain silver iodide and a silver chloride concentration at least 10 mole percent higher than that of the tabular grains.

    • A method for the preparation of silver halide tabular emulsion grains, containing at least 75 % chloride, wherein at least 50 % of the total projected area of all the grains is provided by the tabular grains, and wherein the tabular grains exhibit an average aspect ratio of at least 5:1, an average thickness not greater than 0.5 micron and an average diameter of at least 0.6 micron. The method comprisespreparing a dispersion medium containing a gelatino-peptizer, and a compound ##STR1## wherein Z represents the atoms necessary to form a fused on aromatic carbocyclic or heterocyclic, unsubstituted or substituted ring, e.g., substituted with alkyl, alkenyl, aryl, alkoxy, hydroxy, mercapto, carboxy, amino or halogen, R is hydrogen or a substituent as defined for ring Z; n is 1 or 0, and Q represents carbon in which case n=1, or Q represents nitrogen, in which latter case n =0; in a concentration ranging from 10.sup.-4 to 10.sup.-2 molar. The pH of the medium is adjusted to between 5.0 and 9.0 and to a pCl between 1.0 and 2.0 by means of a chloride ions providing salt;performing a silver halide precipitation comprising at least one double jet step by introducing in the dispersion medium at least one solution containing chloride ions and at least one solution containing silver ions in such a way that pCl is maintained between 1.0 and 2.0, pH is maintained between 5.0 and 9.0 and the concentration of compound (Ia) or (Ib) is maintained between 10.sup.-4 molar and 10.sup.-2 molar; andremoving excess of soluble salts by a wash technique performed at a pH value comprised between 4.0 and 9.0.
