    • Attrition resistant metal/oxygen compositions comprising the infusion and reaction product of an alumina existing in a crystal form selected from the group consisting of .gamma., .delta., .eta., and .chi. crystal forms, and mixtures thereof, or that can be transformed by heat to such crystal forms, and characterized by a mean particle size from about 10 .mu.m to about 200 .mu.m, a fractional porosity of at least 0.2, a surface area of at least 150 m.sup.2 /g, and a pore diameter such that at least 10 percent of the pores are less than 55 .ANG., and at least one metal oxide, or compound convertible by heat to such metal oxide, having a maximum mean particle size of about 100 .mu.m, with the proviso that the alumina/metal oxide mean particle size ratio is at least 2, which metal oxide is susceptible of undergoing infusion and reaction with the alumina upon being subjected to temperatures of at least 0.4 T.sub.m for a time sufficient to cause infusion and reaction between the metal oxide and the alumina, wherein T.sub.m is the melting point in .degree.K. of the alumina, are useful in a wide variety of metal oxide-catalyzed reactions. The compositions are especially useful in reactions which involve reaction conditions of high stress, for example, vapor phase oxidations under fluidized bed conditions.

The compositions are especially useful for the dehydrocoupling of toluene to yield toluene dehydrocoupled products in high yields and selectivities.

    • A process for preparing an alkenyl derivative of an aromatic hydrocarbon by reacting a conjugated diolefin with the aromatic hydrocarbon comprises conducting the reaction in the presence of a catalyst comprising:1. a nickel compound which is soluble in the aromatic hydrocarbon;2. an organo-aluminum halide; and3. a modifying agent wherein the modifying agent (3) is a compound of the formulae ##STR1## wherein X in each case is chlorine, bromine or iodine; andR.sup.1 to R.sup.16 independently are each a straight-chain or branched, saturated or unsaturated aliphatic or cycloaliphatic hydrocarbon radical of 1-20 carbon atoms, optionally substituted by 1-41 halogen atoms, ora hydrocarbon aryl radical of 6-14 carbon atoms, optionally substituted by(a) 1-5 straight-chain or branched, saturated or unsaturated, aliphatic or cycloaliphatic radicals, each of 1-10 carbon atoms optionally substituted by halogen atoms, or(b) 1-9 halogen atoms, and wherein R.sup.4 to R.sup.16 can alternatively be hydrogen, andR.sup.1 and R.sup.2 can also be hydrogen when R.sup.3 is optionally substituted hydrocarbon aryl as defined above, andR.sup.9 and R.sup.10 together can alternatively form a fused-on optionally substituted ring system,4. and, optionally, water.

    • Toluene dehydrocoupled products are produced by heating toluene in the vapor phase with an inorganic metal/oxygen composition which functions as an oxygen carrier and has the empirical formula:M.sub.a.sup.1 M.sub.b.sup.2 M.sub.c.sup.3 O.sub.xwhere M.sup.1 is lead, M.sup.2 is bismuth, and M.sup.3 is at least one element selected from silver, zinc, indium, germanium, phosphorus, arsenic, thorium, the lanthanides or rare earths, Groups 1a, 2a, 3b, 4b, and 8 of the Periodic Table of the Elements, and mixtures thereof, and wherein a is 1, b is 0.01 to 10, c is 0.01 to 10, and x is a number taken to satisfy the average valences of M.sup.1, M.sup.2, and M.sup.3 in the oxidation states in which they exist in the composition. Alternatively, the same inorganic metal/oxygen composition can be employed as a catalyst or as a combination catalyst/oxygen carrier for the dehydrocoupling reaction when oxygen or an oxygen-containing gas is heated with the toluene.
