    • An improved film gate for a continuous motion or real-time motion picture telecine. A housing supports and transports a film in continuous motion past a frame aperture. A precision milled entry guide roller receives the film from a feed spool, edge-stabilizes the film, and directs the film to a precision milled first entry sprocket. The entry sprocket is positioned prior to the frame aperture, pin registers the film, and directs the film across the frame aperture. A precision milled exit sprocket positioned subsequent to the frame aperture receives the film after it passes across the frame aperture and pin registers the film. A precision milled exit guide roller receives the film from the exit sprocket, edge stabilizes the film, and guides the film to a drive capstan and take up reel. The precision sprockets and rollers serve as film stabilizing means. A floating guide means positioned at the frame aperture provides additional edge stabilization of the film as it is guided past the frame aperture. Film jitter and weave are mechanically removed to less than about 20 nanoseconds without the use of complex expensive electronics.

    • A method and apparatus for correction of both horizontal and vertical film weave is disclosed in connection with continuous motion type moving beam recorder or playback devices such as electron beam or laser beam recorders or flying spot scanner or line scan telecines. Weave correction is accomplished by scanning the sprocket hole of the film and generating a correction signal to compensate for the film weave. The film weave is corrected by electronic weave correction as opposed to mechanical pin registration means. The sprocket hole is scanned in the vertical direction to locate the upper and lower edges of the sprocket hole, and then to position the beam in the vertical center of the hole and for determination of vertical weave of the film. The sprocket hole is then scanned in the hozizontal direction, for determination of the horizontal weave of the film. In a film to tape transfer system the edge position of the sprocket hole is advantageously determined by comparing the actual detected signal with a fast peak detector signal set at 90% of the actual signal level. Provision is made for setting windows for acceptable weave corrections signals such that if the detected error exceeds the window, the previous weave correction signal which is within the window is used.

    • Frame-rate converting film scanning apparatus capable of scanning film (having frame location indicia) projected at any speed, selected from within a range of speeds, to produce a television signal having a standard field rate is disclosed. The scanning apparatus is of the type employing a solid-state line sensor for scanning a projected image of the film in a direction generally perpendicular to the length of the film and a rotating multifacet mirror to displace the projected image relative to the line sensor for effecting a raster scan of a film frame to produce a standard television signal. The apparatus includes a frame position sensor responsive to a frame-rate converted image of the frame location indicia for producing a frame location signal. The speed of rotation of the mirror is controlled by a phase locked loop servo that employs a standard television vertical synchronization signal as a reference and receives the frame location signal as a feedback signal. The speed of rotation of the mirror is controlled by the phase locked loop such that the frame location signal and the vertical synchronization signal are in phase, thereby insuring proper frame-rate conversion regardless of the film projection speed.
