    • A tunable bidirectional multiplexer/demultiplexer (MUX/DEMUX) is disclosed for adding and dropping wavelength channels between an optical transmission system and at least one optical transceiver. The MUX/DEMUX includes at least one add port for adding wavelength channels, at least one drop port for dropping wavelength channels, and at least one first optical circulator coupled to the at least one drop port and the at least one add port. The MUX/DEMUX further includes at least one 1×N wavelength-selective switch coupled to the at least one first optical circulator, and at least one second optical circulator coupled to at least one transceiver port on a second side of the at least one wavelength-selective switch, where the optical circulators and switching components are disposed within a common housing. The at least one wavelength-selective switch and ports are configured such that an optical signal communicated from the at least one transceiver port to the at least one add port follows a first optical path, and an optical signal communicated from the at least one drop port to the at least one transceiver port follows a second optical path, where a portion of the first and second optical paths are the same.

    • A disclosed optical add/drop multiplexing device demultiplexes a first signal into multiple signals according to wavelengths, drops one or more of the demultiplexed signals to a transponder, adds one or more signals output from the transponder, multiplexes these signals into a second signal, and outputs it. The device includes an injecting unit for injecting one of measurement signals, each of whose wavelength corresponds to that of a different demultiplexed signal, into a core of a multicore cable within the device, the core being used to transmit the different demultiplexed signal having the corresponding wavelength; a preventing unit for preventing the one measurement signal from emanating; a measuring unit for measuring, for each wavelength, levels of the one measurement signal before and after the corresponding core; a calculating unit for calculating loss of the corresponding core, based on the measured levels; and an informing unit for reporting the calculated loss.

    • An optical add-drop multiplexer having first and second routes includes: an optical cross connect; a first multiplexer optically coupled to a plurality of output ports of the optical cross connect; a second multiplexer optically coupled to a plurality of other output ports of the optical cross connect; a first wavelength selective switch to generate a first WDM optical signal including an optical signal output from the first multiplexer and to guide the first WDM optical signal to the first route; and a second wavelength selective switch to generate a second WDM optical signal including optical signal output from the second multiplexer and to guide the second WDM optical signal to the second route.
