    • A decoding system decodes forward error correction (FEC) encoded data. Factor graph circuitry (such as trellis decoder circuitry) processes the FEC encoded data according to at least one factor graph. Order restoring circuitry (such as convolutional deinterleaver circuitry) is coupled to an output of the factor graph circuitry and restores ordering of symbols in the encoded data. Error detection and correction circuitry is coupled to an output of the order restoring circuitry and processes block-based error correcting codes to detect and correct errors in the FEC encoded data and to provide a hard-decision output to an output of the decoding system. Feedback circuitry (such as convolutional interleaver circuitry and symbol interleaver circuitry) is coupled to process the hard-decision output from the error correction and detection circuitry and to provide the processed hard-decision output to the factor graph circuitry.

    • A transmitting system and a method for processing data are disclosed herein. The transmitting system includes a service multiplexer and at least one transmitter located in a remote position from the service multiplexer. Herein, the service multiplexer generates an RS frame having the size of N(row)xl87(column) bytes including at least one type of mobile service data, packetizes the RS frame into a plurality of mobile service data packets, and multiplexes the packetized mobile service data packets with a main service data packet at a predetermined data rate, thereby transmitting the multiplexed data packets. Herein, each mobile service data packet is configured of a TS header and a data region, and the data region is configured of at least one of a payload region and an adaptation field region. The transmitter recovers the RS frame from the mobile service data packets based upon the TS header of each mobile service data packet transmitted from the service multiplexer, and performs error correction encoding and block encoding on data of the recovered RS frame, thereby transmitting the processed RS frame data to a receiving system.

    • The present invention relates to an improved decoding scheme for use in a concatenated channel decoder. In the present invention, the decoding of the concatenated code is done iteratively to increase the confidence for any corrected symbols. As a result, the overall performance of the decoder is improved. This iterative process comprises using a Maximal a posteriori (MAP) decoder which generates decoded information, to include Erasure Information. The output of the MAP decoder is then supplied to a Reed Solomon (RS) decoder, which attains better error correction performance by using this Erasure Information. This improved output of the RS decoder is then supplied back to the MAP decoder, thereby improving the performance of the system.

    • A method for trellis constellation shaping is disclosed. In one embodiment, this method comprises receiving two or more input bits and filtering at least one of the two or more input bits to create two or more filtered output bits. The step of filtering at least one input bit introduces at least one extra bit. The method then encodes the input bits which are not filtered to create encoded bits and stores the encoded bits and the filtered bits in a buffer. A processing element may be configured to perform Viterbi type processing on the filtered bits to create processed bits. The method combines at least one of the processed bits with at least one of the buffered bits to create a combined bit set from the buffered bits and then performs mapping on the combined bet set to thereby map the combined bit set into a constellation.
