    • A memory card reading device comprises a card reader and an adapter. The card reader has a microprocessor, multiple memory card interface circuits, a control circuit, a multiplexer and a connecting port to link with the memory card or the adapter. After the microprocessor and the control circuit detect the specification of the memory card of the adapter, the microprocessor directs the multiplexer to switch to a specific interface circuit corresponding to the detected specification. Therefore the microprocessor can access the data stored on the memory card via the selected specific interface circuit.

The dual interface memory card has a memory unit and a micro control unit connected to the memory unit.     • An element which can be plugged into an electronic data processing (EDP) device, for receiving a user card which is equipped with components, including at least one of a processor and/or data memory, a frame having an exterior form, which is designed to accommodate the user card, a first interface for transferring data between the element and the EDP device, and a second interface formed by contacts on the user card and on the frame, for transferring data to and from the user card. The exterior form of the frame is that of a diskette so that it can be inserted into a diskette station of an EDP device. The first interface between the element and the EDP device is designed in a standard fashion, so that data can be transferred using a standard read/write device already present in the diskette station of the EDP device. The frame carries a battery for supplying current via the interface to the components located on the user card, if required, and carries an additional processor and data memory for providing the element with additional processor and storage capacity.

    • An adapter which can be plugged into a floppy disk drive of a computer can receive a plurality of user insertable and removable memory modules therein and provide access to the memory modules by the computer for reading and/or writing thereto. The adapter has a frame having an exterior form designed to be insertable into a floppy drive and accommodate the plurality of modules. The frame houses interface circuitry for facilitating the transferring of data between the adapter and a read/write head of a floppy disk drive. The adapter provides a plurality of recesses with contacts for coupling with corresponding contacts of memory modules when inserted therein, providing a path for transferring data to and from the modules. The frame may also accommodate a battery and/or a generator/alternator and associated regulator circuitry 14 (see FIG. 2a) for supplying current to the adapter circuitry and the memory modules.

Due to the flexibility and functionality offered by smart cards that have microprocessors incorporated therein, the multi-protocol smart card can be used to drive, or otherwise communicate with, any of a variety of peripheral devices, whether or not a personal computer is present in the system.
