    • An information retrieval system is provided to retrieve through a retrieval object database storing retrieval object data so as to obtain retrieval result data. In accordance with a retrieval condition which is expressed by a logical expression or else and is input by a user, the information retrieval system produces the retrieval result data in consideration of hierarchically-structured indexes which have nodes and leaves arranged in a tree structure, wherein each of the leaves has an index for the retrieval object data. Then, the retrieval result data are narrowed down in accordance with prescribed procedures. Herein, the system obtains question nodes corresponding to common nodes commonly connected with leaves pointing to the retrieval result data while obtaining answer nodes to the question nodes. The question nodes and answer nodes are visually presented for the user in an order determined by occurrence probabilities representing occurrence of the retrieval object data within the retrieval result data. So, the retrieval result data are narrowed down to match with the answer node which is selected by the user and which is provided for the question node selected by the user. Incidentally, main functions of the information retrieval system can be actualized on the computer in accordance with programs, recorded on recording media, in association with storage unit storing the database.

    • A system for generating a structured query language query to extract data from a database wherein the database includes a schema defined by a plurality of record sources and a plurality of relationships therebetween. The system includes selecting a field set containing at least one field from among said plurality record sources in said database, and determining a minimal path relationship between each of the plurality of record sources in the database that contain at least one field from the field set. The minimal path relationship includes at least one indirect relationship between two of the plurality of record sources in the database that contain at least one field from the field set. Output from the intelligent joining system is a Structured Query Language (SQL) statement in the syntactical form that a database management system can execute. Additional output can include an edge set containing the minimal paths between record sources that contain at least one field from the field set, and a graph of the sub-schema defined by the field set. The output is generated from the above identified inputs in a manner transparent to the database user.

    • An end user query technology is taught which is capable of automatically understanding the database model and guiding the user to scout for the desired information, thereby increasing productivity and ease of information access. The user is freed from the need to understanding the database model, with the end user query facility of this invention quickly guiding the user to acquire the information. This is made possible by the end user query facility of this invention first recapturing the application semantics from the existing database model to provide a set of derived semantics. The derived semantics are then used by the end user query facility to intelligently guide the user to scout for the desired information in the database. In addition, the derived semantics can be easily updated by the end user query facility when the database model is changed.
