    • An apparatus and method for determining the location of a mobile object are disclosed. The apparatus includes a GPS module unit, a mobile communication module unit, a USN module unit, and a control module unit. The GPS module unit receives a GPS signal including the coordinate information of the current location of a mobile object. The mobile communication module unit is operated when the GPS module unit has received the GPS signal, and transmits the coordinate information of the current location of the mobile object and the ID of the mobile object to a location estimation apparatus. The USN module unit is operated when the GPS module unit fails to receive the GPS signal, and broadcasts a beacon signal carrying the ID of the mobile object. The control module unit operates any one of the mobile communication module unit and the USN module unit.

    • A personal locator beacon system including at least one individual locator device and a plurality of battery powered wireless beacons installed at different locations within a facility. Each individual locator device is worn by a corresponding individual and has a local wireless transceiver and a GPS receiver. The plurality of beacons include at least a subset of reed switch beacons installed at different doorway locations within the facility. Each reed switch beacon is configured to transmit an identification signal with a predetermined signal strength for reception by the local wireless transceiver of the individual locator device within a designated area of the facility, as well as to selectively acquire a perimeter mode for detecting opening of a respective door of the facility.

    • A system for locating a lost pet includes: a tag configured to be worn on the pet; a handheld device configured to be connected with the tag wirelessly; a remote server configured to store information that corresponds to the pet wearing the tag; and an application installed on the handheld device and configured to provide a user interface and establish a connection with the remote server. The tag includes wireless communication means and a unique identification code for distinguishing the tag among a plurality of tags, and is configured to broadcast the unique identification code wirelessly. The handheld device is configured to establish a connection with the tag within a predetermined range, receive the broadcasted unique identification code from the tag, and trigger a predetermined routine if the connection with the tag is terminated. A method for locating a lost pet is also provided.
