    • The specification discloses a low-cost, simple, and efficient duct system for conveying heated and/or cooled air throughout a building. The system includes duct assemblies and transition components for interconnecting the duct assemblies. Each duct assembly includes an insulated duct having a rigid sleeve within at least one end. Each sleeve includes an abutment ring and orifices in the ring for permitting air to flow into the insulated layer to balloon the layer and improve its insulative effect. Each transition component includes a rigid external skeleton and a plurality of duct board panels fitted therein. After the sleeves are fitted within openings in the duct board panels, the tabs are deformed to retain the abutment rings in engagement with the panels.

    • The invention comprises an economical, adjustable duct section which allows an installer to mount and connect a curved end thereof to an opening in an air duct bend and to adjust the other end to a desired predetermined angle with respect to the horizontal. The invention makes it more feasible to install a second air handler on an outlet duct bend of a first air handler for augmenting an output of the first air handler on the roof of a building or the like. It provides an easily made water and weather tight seal between the assembled units.

    • A joint assembly for connecting the ends of a pair of generally rectangular sheet metal duct sections includes a pair of frame members secured to each other and connected to the respective duct end sections. The frame members each include four flange portions. Each flange portion has an upstanding channel shaped leg portion and an angularly extending duct receiving leg portion. A corner piece connects adjacent flange portions and extends into the channel portions of the upstanding leg portions to form the generally rectangular frame. The end portions of the ducts are inserted into longitudinal openings of the duct receiving leg portions. A flowing type gasket material is positioned in a longitudinal pocket of each flange. The end of each duct wall partially displaces the gasket material so that the gasket material extrudes outwardly around the duct wall and between the ends of the flange portion and the corner piece. The surface of the corner piece flange portion is displaced from the front vertical wall of the upstanding channel shaped leg portion so that the edge of the duct extends beyond the flange portion and penetrates an outside gasket member positioned on the upstanding channel shaped leg portion and the corner piece. This provides an effective seal to prevent air within the duct from flowing around the end of the duct and between the outer surface of the duct and the surface of the flange portion of the corner piece.

    • A duct jointing system is provided which includes a plurality of elongate frame members, each being a single piece of sheet metal folded to define a particular section. The section includes an open channel to receive an edge portion of the sheet metal duct, the channel having a base, a first web extending generally perpendicularly to said channel from a location adjacent the base, an outer portion at the end of the first web remote from the channel, the outer portion extending in the same general direction as the channel, and a second web extending obliquely toward the channel from a location adjacent the remote end of the first web. The single piece of sheet metal has an expanded portion constituting substantially the whole of the second web. A plurality of corner pieces are provided, each having two ends angled to each other, each end being insertable endwise into one end of one of the elongate frame members, and means are provided for securing together adjacent frame members on opposing duct ends.

    • A plurality of flange portions are positioned oppositely of one another on the ends of a pair of generally rectangular sheet metal ducts. The flange portions are positioned in pairs on the adjacent ends of the ducts and each flange portion includes an upstanding wall having a pair of end portions for receiving the right angle legs of corner pieces. Four corner pieces extend into abutting relation with the upstanding walls at the four corners of the end of each duct to form a frame around the duct end portion. Each corner piece has a corner section, and a pair of legs extend angularly from the corner section. The pair of legs extend into abutting relation with the upstanding walls of adjacent flange portions on each duct end portion. In the assembled joint, the frames around the duct end portions are oppositely positioned with a gasket member positioned between the flange upstanding walls and the surfaces of abutting corner pieces. Each corner piece includes a corner and an outer edge with a corner flange. A channel-shaped clamp is forcibly slidable on the corner flanges of adjacent corner pieces to a position closely adjacent the flange upstanding walls on the duct end portions. Each clamp connects and compresses together adjacent corner pieces to exert a sealing force upon the gasket member to form an air tight seal around the assembled duct end portions.

    • A flexible connector for flat wall sheet metal ducting comprises an elongated sleeve duct of rectangular cross-section and a pair of connector ducts, each having an end portion telescoped into an end portion of the sleeve duct with the walls of the connector duct in widthwise parallel inwardly spaced relation to respective walls of the sleeve duct. A resiliently compressible gasket is secured in the sleeve duct near each end thereof, surrounding and compressed against the adjacent connector duct, which is slidable in the gasket so that the sleeve duct can swing in a pair of opposite directions relative to the connector duct. Each of a pair of opposite walls of each connector duct has an exterior surface defined by a false wall which is arcuately curved along its length concentrically to the axis about which the sleeve duct swings. To confine the sleeve duct against substantial lengthwise displacement relative to the connector ducts, each connector duct has abutments near said axis, engaging end edges of sleeve duct walls that extend widthwise in said opposite directions.
