    • A method of stocking a building under construction with wallboard panels, and apparatus. A stack of horizontal panels is delivered to the building site by truck, and removed by a fork lift truck, and then placed on a pallet provided with transverse rollers. The pallet, loaded with the stack of horizontal panels, is lifted to an upper floor, and a self-propelled transporter vehicle on that floor is placed adjacent the pallet. The stack is transferred as a unit to the transporter, which then delivers the stack to a desired location on the floor of the building, the stack of horizontal panels being discharged as a unit from the transporter.The pallet has three sets of rollers, longitudinally spaced, so as to provide between each two sets a passage which is upwardly facing, unobstructed, and which will receive one of the tines of a fork lift truck. One of the rollers is powered from a source of energy carried on the pallet. The pallet is provided with lifting eyes on outwardly extending arms at either end of the pallet.

    • A cargo loading system is disclosed comprising a car, cargo conveying means mounted on the car, and transmission means also mounted on the car for transmitting driving force to the cargo conveying means. Drive means are positioned at a cargo loading station. Coupling means are also provided for coupling the drive means with the transmission means when the car is located at the loading station.A method is also disclosed for loading cars with cargo. The method comprises the steps of positioning a car having first cargo conveyor means mounted thereto adjacent a cargo transfer platform having second cargo conveying means mounted thereto. The first and second cargo conveying means are mechanically coupled together. One of the cargo conveyor means is then coupled with conveyor drive means which drive the first and second conveyor means simultaneously.

    • Methods and apparatus for transporting and handling relatively large articles of uniform size, as for example, loaded pallets. A boxlike unit load container, of a size corresponding generally to that of the cargo portion of a conventional semitrailer, is constructed with an open framed gridlike bottom having openings of lesser dimensions than those of the bottoms of the individual articles or pallets so as to support the articles with a major portion of the bottom surface of the article overlying and exposed through one or more of the openings in the container bottom. A shipping or receiving dock platform is provided with a conveyor system with a terminal group of conveying elements arranged in a pattern corresponding to that of the openings in the unit load container bottom so that the conveying elements can project or be projected upwardly through the openings in the container bottom to an elevation above the article supporting surface of the bottom when the container is at rest on the dock platform. The conveying elements thus enable the articles or loaded pallets to be conveyed into or out of the unit load container. The container is provided with means for detachably securing it onto the bed of a trailer frame for over-the-road transport and the securing means can also be employed to secure the container to a lifting sling.
