    • A device executes a preceding vehicle following driving control and successively calculates a friction-braking-start threshold value, an engine-braking-start threshold value, an acceleration-control-completion threshold value by using equations L1, L2 and L3, respectively. The device uses a constant vehicle speed zone determined between the engine-braking-start threshold value and the acceleration-control-completion threshold value. When a compensated-evaluation-index value KdB_c of a vehicle distance between the own vehicle and a preceding vehicle is within the constant vehicle speed zone, the device drives the own vehicle at a constant speed. This control suppresses fuel consumption because of decreasing an acceleration and deceleration frequency of the own vehicle. Decreasing the deceleration frequency makes it possible to provide good vehicle following because less frequent acceleration is needed for following the preceding vehicle even if another vehicle cuts in between the own vehicle and the preceding vehicle or the preceding vehicle accelerates after decelerating.

    • A method and device for provisionally determining the mass of a vehicle when it is initialized. After initialization of the vehicle, the method determines a vehicle mass value by a static mass determination method and then checks whether this value is within a predetermined tolerance band around the dynamically last-determined vehicle mass value, which has been stored for that purpose. If this is so, and there has in the meantime been no significant change of the vehicle's mass, the previously stored dynamic vehicle mass value is probably more accurate and is used in the determination. Otherwise it can be assumed that the vehicle mass value has changed substantially, and the statically determined vehicle mass value is therefore used until a device for the dynamic determination of a vehicle mass can supply a more accurate vehicle mass value after a short time.

    • Systems, methods and devices are provided that allow more efficient transfer and processing of sensor information in a hierarchical data system. The system provides for a plurality of component area managers (CAM), each of the CAMS being in operable communication with at least one of a plurality of transducers that monitors a phenomena of a component and in operable communication with a data bus. A CAM comprises a processor in operable communication with the at least one transducer of the plurality of transducers, wherein the first processor is configured to record data generated by the at least one transducer of the plurality of transducers, to reduce the recorded data, to place the reduced data on the data bus. The system also includes a transducer selection module controlled by the first processor by which the first processor selects one of the plurality of transducers to record and a rolling buffer in operable communication with the first processor and in operable communication with the at least one transducer by which to record the data generated by the at least one transducer of the plurality in a first-in-first-out manner.

    • A vehicle data recorder according to an embodiment of the present invention comprises a processor, a power supply, a program memory for storing directions to be executed by the processor, a video camera for recording video data, a random-access memory for storing video data received from the video camera in a continuous-loop fashion, a non-volatile memory for storing video data from the random-access memory in response to a triggering event, a first sensor for detecting a triggering event, and a video display, wherein the video display displays video stored in the non-volatile memory, and wherein the vehicle data recorder is detachable from the motor vehicle and is capable of playing back video stored in the non-volatile memory while detached from the motor vehicle.
