    • An apparatus for scoring or cutting has a generally stationary frame, a lower cradle in the frame, and a plurality of lower rollers rotatable in the cradle about respective roller axes and all tangent to an imaginary lower cylinder centered on a lower axis. A lower arbor centered on the lower axis has one end projecting into and supported by a lower journal in the frame and an opposite unsupported end. A lower tube is fitted snugly on the lower arbor and has an outer surface lying on the lower cylinder and resting on the lower rollers. Similarly, an upper pressure plate in the frame carries a plurality of upper rollers rotatable in the pressure plate about respective axes and all tangent to an imaginary upper cylinder centered on an upper axis. An upper arbor centered on the upper axis has one end projecting into and supported by an upper journal in the frame and an opposite unsupported end. An upper tube fitted snugly on the upper arbor has an outer surface lying on the upper cylinder and resting on the upper rollers, one of the tubes being formed with at least one annular cutting/scoring ridge. The frame is formed at the opposite ends with a window sufficiently large that the tubes can be withdrawn axially from the respective arbors through the window. Actuators braced between the frame and the pressure plate push the upper tube downward.

    • A die-cutting machine comprises two form-carrying rolls (10,12) operable in timed relation to produce alternate blanks, with minimum wastage between the blanks, from a web fed at constant speed by a conventional feed mechanism (14). The rolls (10,12) are driven by computer-controlled variable speed high impulse duty D.C. motors (28, 30) supplied with electrical power from thyristor controlled power supplies (36,38). Sensors (18, 24, 26) provide feedback signals representing web speed and instantaneous roll positions and speeds to the programmable computer units (32, 34). The use of the computer-controlled D.C. motors avoids backlash problems in previously proposed mechanical drives and allows greater flexibility, especially in maintaining registration between the rolls and preprinted areas on the web. A flywheel arrangement is employed to reduce the loading on the motors during large variations in roll speed.

    • A diecutting apparatus is disclosed which accepts interchangeable die cylinders of a variety of lengths and diameters. Rapid replacement, adjustment and reversal of the die is possible. The station has a support bar for mounting the die cylinder and a slidable support for the die cylinder bearing blocks. The bearing blocks slide horizontally along the support bar to accept die cylinders of a variety of lengths. The support bar is mounted at each end on transverse slides which slide vertically to accept die cylinders of a variety of diameters. Mounted above the die cylinder support bar is a support slide on which are mounted contact rollers and pressure cylinders for applying a biasing force to the die cylinder. The slides may be fixed in place for each particular die cylinder used. The pressure cylinders and contact rollers act on bearing surfaces on the die cylinder.
