    • Cryosurgical apparatus for necrosing human tissue or the like, the apparatus comprising a coolant supply where coolant comprising nitrous oxide, carbon dioxide, Freon 13 or Freon 23 is disposed within a container as a liquid under its own vapor pressure; pressure elevating means for increasing the vapor pressure so that it is greater than what it would be at room temperature and for maintaining the elevated vapor pressure substantially constant; a cryosurgical instrument having a hollow tissue contacting portion and a coolant expansion means disposed at the distal end of a feed passageway and a discharge path disposed outside of the passageway; and means for supplying the coolant to the feed passageway of the cryosurgical instrument so that the temperature of the coolant discharged through the expansion means is lowered. Means are also disclosed including switchable valve means connected to the discharge path of the cryosurgical instrument, the switchable valve means being switchable to a first position freeze mode to exhaust the coolant from the apparatus and to a second position defrost mode for closing the switchable valve means; defrost discharge means also connected to the discharge path of the cryosurgical instrument, the flow impedance of the defrost discharge means being substantially greater than that of the switchable valve means when it is in its first position freeze mode and substantially less than that of the switchable valve means when it is in its second position defrost mode.

    • A single or multichannel electrical connector including a male connector having at least two prongs depending resiliently from a base, the prongs each having defined in the outer edge thereof a notch with at least one of the notches having at least one conductor exposed at the bottom portion of the notch, the conductor extending internally through the prong, the prongs also having end portions with outwardly facing mutually inclined surfaces, the male connector being adapted to fit a female connector having an opening defined therethrough and configured to receive the prongs with the sides of the notches engaging the front and back endwalls of the female connector adjacent the opening and the connector in the bottom of the notch engaging a contact in a sidewall of the opening in the female connector such that the male connector may be inserted by engaging the opposed inclined planes of the prongs within the opening of the female connector, deforming the prongs towards one another to pass through the female connector thereupon again expanding the prongs to bring the contact of the female connector into engagement with the conductor of the male connector with the notches engaging the front and back end walls of the female connector to secure the male connector therein. In the event more than one conductor is provided in a prong, the prong may be formed of independent sections.

    • An electrical switching device is disclosed herein and comprises the major components suitable for use as a compact, easily installed switching device and also in an electro-surgical tool which, through the operation of the switching device, is readily adaptable for different intended uses and highly reliable. In one embodiment, the switching device includes a tubular housing having an intermediate longitudinally extending slot formed in its wall and a pair of longitudinally extending diametrically opposed recesses formed on its inner surface. A rectangularly shaped printed circuit board is mounted within the diametrically opposed recesses and includes at least three spaced apart electrical contacts which are positioned so as to be accessable through the slot formed in the housing. An integrally formed, elongated spring contact member is disposed in electrical conducting engagement with the center one of these electrical contacts and includes opposing energy absorbing coils, each of which is adapted to engage reliably a corresponding one of the otherwise free contacts. In this regard, in order to increase further the reliability of the engagement of the contacts, means are provided for securing the printed circuit board against inadvertent longitudinal movement within the housing. An arcuately shaped insert is mounted within the aforedescribed slot and engages portions of the lower surface of the circuit board for further securing said insert in place. In addition, the arcuately shaped insert includes a longitudinally extending slot adapted to receive therein a portion of a longitudinally extending rocker type switch actuator for pivotal movement about an axis generally normal to the axis of alignment of the electrical contacts. The free ends of the aforedescribed spring contact member are positioned within recess guides formed in the actuator and move into engagement with their corresponding contacts in response to selective pivotal movement.

    • A safety circuit suitable for use in electrosurgery apparatus to prevent electrical burns is described herein. A current sensing transformer having a pair of primary windings and a single secondary or sense winding is provided. The primary windings are connected so as to compare the input current applied to an active electrode with the output current from an indifferent plate. When the comparison is unequal, the sense winding generates an error signal that warns the operator of the electrosurgery apparatus of a possible electrical burn situation. Alternatively, the primary windings are connected so as to sense the equality of output currents from two indifferent plates. Lack of equality causes an error signal to be generated to warn the operator.
