    • A seat belt retractor absorbs impact by deforming a roll made of steel just like reversely rolling up. When acceleration exceeds a threshold for example in the event of vehicle collision, a lock gear is locked by a lock activating mechanism and pawls engage some of internal teeth of a lock base. A webbing is loaded with significantly large tension by the occupant being moved forward due to the acceleration so that extremely large torque is applied to the lock base from the reel through the pawls. Because of this torque, the steel roll plastically deforms just like being reversely rolled up from the inner end so that the webbing is gradually unwound, thereby softening impact acting on the occupant by the webbing.

    • A seat belt retractor is controlled in consideration of the condition of a vehicle relative to an object and/or the condition of the vehicle to more efficiently and conformably protect the occupant in an emergency. A CPU judges the condition of the vehicle relative to the object based on a detection signal, with regard to the object in front of the vehicle, from a front object detection sensor and drives an electric motor depending on the result of the judgment. The rotation of the electric motor causes a drive side gear clutch, a clutch plate, and a lever member to rotate together. As the rotation of the lever member is stopped, the drive side gear clutch and the clutch plate rotate conversely each other so that the clutch plate shifts axially to engage the teeth thereof with teeth of the driven side gear clutch. As a result, the rotation of the electric motor causes the gear holder and the reel shaft to rotate. In this way, the belt tension of the seat belt is controlled corresponding to the condition of the vehicle relative to the object.

    • A main memory shared by plural processing units in a parallel computer system is composed of plural partial main memories. A directory for each data line of the main memory is generated after the data line has been cached in one of the processing units. The directory is held in one of the partial main memories in place of the data line. The directory indicates a processing unit which has cached the data line. A status bit C provided for the data line is set. If a subsequent read request is given to the data line, the status C bit is checked and the directory is used to identify a processing unit that has cached the data line. The request is transferred to the identified processing unit, and the data line is transferred from that processing unit to the processing unit that has issued the request. If a processing unit that has cached the data line has replaced the data line, it is checked if there is a processing unit that has cached the data line. If there is none, the data line is written back into the one partial main memory. If there is, the data line is not written back. Another status bit RO is also used for each data line. It indicates if the data line is read only. If a data line is read only, generation of the directory and storing it in the partial main memory is prohibited.

The main bag has second gas communicating paths communicating to the sub bag disposed between the connection with the sub bag and the connection with the partition panel. Gases spouted from the inflator inflate the sub bag through the first gas communicating paths and then inflate the main bag through the second communicating paths.

    • A semiconductor laser diode of a ridge type includes a double heterostructure in which a cladding layer is formed in a mesa stripe form and a current block layer which selectively buries mesa side and bottom surfaces of the cladding layer. For fabrication, a first step is to grow, sequentially above a substrate, a second cladding layer, an active layer, a first cladding layer and a cap layer. A second step is to etch the first cladding layer and the cap layer respectively in mesa stripe forms. A third step is to selectively grow current blocking layer on the first cladding layer by a metalorganic vapor phase epitaxy process. A fourth step is to grow contact layers respectively on surfaces of the current blocking layer and the cap layer. In the third step, a gas in which HCl is mixed in a concentration within a range of 0.2.about.2 in a (HCl)/(III gas) ratio is used, which enhances re-evaporation of material on a selective mask. Thus, the protrusion formed in the current blocking layer at each of the mesa side surfaces can be suppressed to a thickness not larger than 10% of a thickness of the current blocking layer at its flat portion. In this way, the stress caused by lattice mismatch at the mesa side portions can be suppressed.
