    • A liquid crystal display device includes, from its back surface side towards its front surface side: a polarization selective reflection plate (12) which reflects x-directional linearly polarized light and transmits y-directional linearly polarized light; a first polarizing plate (4) which transmits the x-directional linearly polarized light; a liquid crystal display panel (13); and a second polarizing plate (8) which transmits the y-directional linearly polarized light. The polarization selective reflection plate (12) is arranged only on a back surface side of the liquid crystal display panel (13). The y-directional linearly polarized light incident on the back surface side is reflected from the polarization selective reflection plate (12), there by protecting privacy. The x-directional linearly polarized light transmitted reaches the front surface side, via the first polarizing plate (4), the liquid crystal display panel (13), and the second polarizing plate (8). In this way, it is possible to realize a liquid crystal display device which is capable of performing a good screen displaying even under a strong surrounding light environment.

    • A double-sided display which can suitable carry out black display both in a well-lighted place and a dark place is provided. The following members are disposed in the B direction: a first polarizing plate (14) which allows only a linearly polarized light component to pass through; a liquid crystal layer (13) which, when a voltage is applied thereto, optically rotates and causes linearly polarized light in one direction to be linearly polarized light in the other direction, while, when no voltage is applied, does not alter the direction of the linearly polarized light; a polarizing selective reflector (16) which reflects the linearly polarized light in one direction while allows the linearly polarized light in the other direction to pass through; and a second polarizing plate (15) which absorbs the light in one direction while allows the light in the other direction to pass through. The polarizing selective reflector (16) is disposed only in the B direction of the liquid crystal layer (13). Double-sided image reproduction is realized by carrying out reflective image reproduction on the side in the A direction and carrying out transmission image reproduction on the side in the B direction.

    • A reflective type liquid crystal display device in accordance with the present invention includes a reflector film having excellent polarization preservation properties and an anisotropic diffusing film for diffusing only the light polarized in a particular direction. The anisotropic diffusing film is composed of a complex of liquid crystal and a polymer and selectively diffuses incident light. If a liquid crystal layer composed of dichroic dye and liquid crystal is employed, it becomes possible to carry out high contrast display with the anisotropic diffusing film and the reflector film and to prevent reflections of nearby objects appearing on the screen. Similarly, if a liquid crystal layer composed of liquid crystal and a polymer and having a twist angle of orientation of the liquid crystal specified to be in a range of 40° to 50° between an insulating substrate and a reflector member is employed, and the reflector film possesses excellent polarization preservation properties, similarly to the above case a reflective type liquid crystal display device can be obtained which reflects no nearby objects on the screen and can carry out high contrast display.

    • A liquid crystal element is equipped with at least one polarizer provided on a light entering side thereof, an insulating substrate on which transparent electrodes, a light reflecting member having a light reflecting surface on one side thereof, and a liquid crystal layer sealed between the insulating substrate and the reflecting member, in which liquid crystal molecules and liquid-crystalline polymers are both twist-aligned through a same angle. In the case of a dark display, incident light linearly polarized enters the liquid crystal layer, becoming circularly polarized light at the reflection surface, and after being reflected, when outgoing, the light becomes a linearly polarized light having a plane of polarization rotated through an angle of 90.degree. as compared with that of the incident light. On the other hand, in the case of a bright display, the incident light linearly polarized enters, and when outgoing, it has become diffused light, resulting from that only polarized light components identical to the incident light passed through the element. Thus, by applying a new LCD mode in which the absorption state and the diffusion state are controlled by application of a voltage, a reflection-type LCD device with high colorfulness and display performance, which does not cause a parallax, can be provided.
