    • An apparatus and method for determination of the endpoint for chemical mechanical polishing of a layer of dielectric material formed on an integrated circuit wafer. A first voltage is generated which is proportional to the current supplying electrical power to the electric motor driving the polishing mechanism. The current is proportional to the rate of removal of dielectric material by the polishing process. The integral over time of the first voltage, which is proportional to the amount of dielectric material removed, is generated by an integrator circuit. A comparator circuit compares the integral over time of the first voltage to a reference voltage. The reference voltage is proportional to the initial thickness of the dielectric material and is a function of the age of the polishing pad. When the integral over time of the first voltage is less than the reference voltage the polishing continues. When the integral over time of the first voltage is equal to the reference voltage or becomes larger than the reference voltage the polishing is stopped.

    • A surveillance system for monitoring outbreak of a contagious disease is disclosed. The system comprises a handheld computing and communication device with a short range ad hoc networking device. Handheld devices carried by persons in contacting with the device carried by a user form an ad hoc communication network at a location. Identities of all devices in the ad hoc network are broadcasted through the network. The user's device receives the identities and stores the received data in a log file. The log file may be sent to a central station after the device receives an authorized signal during an outbreak event of the contagious disease. The device may further include a body temperature automatic measuring system. The user's body temperature trend file may be sent together with the log file.

    • A system and method of delivering personalized media items to users of an interactive television is disclosed. The system comprises a television terminal, a computing device and a remote control device. The computing device further comprises a set top box. The computing device may be connected to a server through a communication network. The system stores a personal profile for each of its users. Personal mobile devices associated with the users are connected wirelessly to the computing device. Identities of the users may be transmitted from the personal mobile devices to the computing device. Media items are selected based upon the personal profiles according to a predetermined algorithm. Selected media items may be delivered using scrolling tickers displayed on the television terminal.

    • A power supply system is disclosed. The system comprises an AC power source from a power grid and a DC power source from an alternative power generation system. The alternative power generation system may comprise one or a plurality of solar systems. The system may also comprise one or a plurality of wind turbines. The AC power generated by a generator of the turbine is converted into the DC power by a device comprising a rectifier. There are two groups of electrical appliances connected to the system. The first group receives the AC power only and the second group receives the AC and/or the DC power supplies. The power supply system provides a means of supplying the electrical appliances the DC power with the higher priority and therefore minimizes power consumption from the power grid.
