    • A hydrated EGR system, method and apparatus for a vehicle, in which heat from an exhaust pipe is used to heat an aqueous fluid solution in a water tank. A portion of the hot exhaust gas is diverted from the main exhaust flow, and the diverted portion is bubbled through the heated aqueous fluid solution to form a hydrated EGR mixture containing water vapor. The hydrated EGR mixture is then fed back to an intake portion of the engine, is mixed with an incoming fuel/air mixture, and is burned with the fuel air mixture inside the engine. The use of the hydrated EGR mixture, including heated water vapor, as part of the intake charge simultaneously reduces harmful exhaust emissions, improves engine performance, and improves fuel economy of the vehicle.

    • A method and apparatus for treating fluid are provided. The fluid treatment device may include a housing having a fluid treatment element therein. The device may further include at least one of (i) an inlet channel coupled to the housing and configured to direct fluid toward the fluid treatment element and (ii) an outlet channel coupled to the housing and configured to direct fluid away from the fluid treatment element.     • In an engine exhaust muffler with an exhaust emission control function, the inside of a box-shaped muffler body is divided into a first exhaust chamber and a second exhaust chamber by a partitioning member which has a third exhaust chamber formed therein. The muffler body is provided with an exhaust inlet for introducing exhaust gas from an engine into the first exhaust chamber. The partitioning member is provided with first communication bores providing communication between the first and second exhaust chambers, and second communication bores providing communication between the second exhaust chamber and the third exhaust chamber. The third exhaust chamber is open to the atmosphere through an exhaust outlet pipe. An exhaust emission control catalyst is carried on an outer surface of the partitioning member facing the first and second exhaust chambers, as well as on an inner surface of the partitioning member facing the third exhaust chamber. An inner surface of the muffler body does not carry the exhaust emission control catalyst. Thus, in this exhaust muffler, thermal damages to the adjacent devices are less, the structure is simple and inexpensive, and a loss in output from the engine is less.

    • A two-stroke multiple cylinder engine includes a pair of exhaust chambers having a common control wall and each of which is connected between a corresponding plurality of selected cylinders and a common exhaust passageway. The connection between each of the chambers and the passageway is defined by a tuning section which is constructed of a sufficient length and configuration to generate a negative pressure pulse to aid scavenging and reflected positive pulses from the fired cylinder. In addition, the next fired cylinder of each group establishes super-charging of the engine. The common wall between the two tuned passageways is provided with a transfer port for transferring of a positive pressure signal from the one passageway into the opposite passageway which travels back toward the engine to provide a further positive super-charging pulse to the opposite exhaust chamber. The feedback pressure wave can be applied with particular advantage to four and two cylinder engines.

    • A marine outboard engine has an upper motor cover, a lower cover, an engine, a driveshaft, a gear case, a rotor shaft, and a bladed rotor. First and second exhaust housings are disposed in the lower cover below the engine. The second exhaust housing at least partially surrounds the first exhaust housing. A first exhaust chamber is formed by the first exhaust housing. The first exhaust chamber fluidly communicates with the engine. A second exhaust chamber is formed between the second exhaust housing and the first exhaust housing. The second exhaust chamber fluidly communicates with the first exhaust chamber. A third exhaust chamber formed between the second exhaust housing and the first exhaust housing below the second exhaust chamber is also disclosed. The third exhaust chamber fluidly communicates with the second exhaust chamber and an exterior of the marine outboard engine.

    • An exhaust apparatus for a small boat for reducing exhaust noise. A water muffler is provided at a midsection of the exhaust pipes extending from an engine which is provided in a boat body. An interior of the water muffler is partitioned into an expansion chamber and a resonator chamber with a front exhaust pipe connected to the engine and a rear exhaust pipe opening out of the boat being interlinked with the expansion chamber. The resonator chamber is directly connected to the midsection of the rear exhaust pipe via a connecting pipe. The water muffler is arranged in a longitudinal direction that is oriented in the fore-and-aft direction so as to extend along the side of a pump chamber in which a jet pump driven by the engine is arranged. A second resonator chamber is arranged along the water muffler on the outer side of the water muffler.

    • An exhaust muffler for small marine craft that can be located in the rear portion of the bilge and straddle the drive shaft and the shaft log. The muffler has a shell formed from sides, ends, top and bottom walls. The bottom wall is provided with a concave depression to receive the shaft and shaft log. A preferred configuration of the depression is a semi-conical surface having a base proximate the inlet wall. Further, the top and bottom walls are configured to conform to the undersurface of the deck and the inside of the hull, respectively. An inlet pipe, or a multiple number of inlet pipes, receive exhaust gases and water from the exhaust manifold of the craft engine and direct this combination into the muffler above a water pool. Gases pass through the water pool and exit through an outlet pipe (or a plurality of outlet pipes). A downwardly extending conduit within the outlet pipe(s) provides a correct amount of lift such that an amount of water exits the muffler which is the same as the amount entering. Because of the shape and construction, this muffler can be placed within the bilge of the craft in a space that is normally waste.
