    • A heat transfer roll for producing sheet material, particularly material having a cross-section whose thickness varies across the width of a sheet being formed, includes a journal on which the roll is rotatably supported, and at least two cooling channels at the surface of the roll that can be supplied with various fluids at various flow rates and temperatures. Fluid in the first and second channels flows at predetermined longitudinal positions at the roll surface. The first channel includes cylindrical spiral portions and the second channel includes a circular cylindrical channel located between the spiral portions. A diverter provides hydraulic flow continuity across the second flow channel to first and second portions of the first flow channel. Risers carry fluid radially outward to the flow channels at the outer surface of the roll.

    • A rotary cylinder for use in a calender has a roller with a hollow cylindrical sleeve and two trunnions secured to the end portions of the sleeve. The roller contains a coaxial displacing component which defines with the sleeve an annular clearance for the flow of a cooling or heating fluid, such fluid being admitted through one of the trunnions and being evacuated through the one or the other trunnion. One or more prestressed elastic cushions are interposed between the displacing component and the roller to compensate for and to counteract eventual radial and or axial movements of a portion of or the entire displacing component as a result or unequal heating or cooling of the roller and displacing component. A single cushion may constitute a hollow conical frustum or a hollow cylinder. If the roller contains several cushions, such cushions may constitute discrete disks or ribs which are integral with the displacing component and contact the internal surface of the sleeve.

    • The present invention relates to a roller for the thermomechanical treatment of a web-shaped medium, said roller including: a roller body; axial bores for a thermal treatment fluid which are incorporated in said roller body near to an outer surface of the roller body and into which said thermal treatment fluid flows on an inflow side; inflow zones, formed on said inflow side in the upstream ends of said bores or in feed channels through which the thermal treatment fluid flows into the bores; and directing or guiding means provided in said inflow zones, which transfer a rotational movement of said roller onto the thermal treatment fluid, wherein said directing means at least substantially completely transfer said rotational movement onto the thermal treatment fluid and in this way suppress a relative channel swirl between the bores and the thermal treatment fluid, while still in the inflow zones.
