摘要： A torque-transmitting, variably-flexible, locking insertion device includes a hollow body having a proximal end with an entrance for receiving an instrument, a distal end with a tip for protrusion of the instrument, and a handle to be gripped by an operator. A device locks the handle to and unlocks the handle from the instrument, which is at least partly disposed within the hollow body. A device transitions the hollow body between a relatively flexible condition and a relatively stiff condition. A method for operating a torque-transmitting, locking insertion device includes placing the instrument at least partly within the hollow body and locking the handle to and unlocking the handle from the instrument. The hollow body is transitioned between a relatively flexible condition and a relatively stiff condition.

摘要： An end effector for an endoscopic surgical instrument having a longitudinal body with proximal and distal ends and an actuator at the proximal end of the body includes a clevis to be connected to the distal end of the body and two jaws. Each of the jaws has a tang portion pivotally connected to the clevis and to be connected to the actuator for pivoting the jaw. The jaw has body portion with a lateral side having substantially straight opposing edges and a proximal portion connecting the lateral side to the tang portion and a nose portion connected to the lateral side and having substantially linear edges at an angle to the edges of the lateral side. The hollow body and nose portions define a biopsy cup for receiving a tissue sample therein and the opposing and linear edges form a pinching surface for contacting extremities of the tissue sample.

摘要： A medical device includes a control handle, an end effector, and a passive articulating joint connecting the end effector to the handle. The handle has a stapling actuator, an articulation joint actuator different from the stapling actuator, and a body through which the stapling and articulation joint actuators traverse. The end effector has an anvil, a stapler cartridge with staples, and an anvil-cartridge control device connected thereto and to the stapling actuator and staples when the stapling actuator is actuated. The stapling actuator passes through the articulating joint and flexes correspondingly to articulation of the articulating joint. The articulation joint actuator, when unactuated, holds the articulation joint and, thereby, the end effector, in a substantially fixed articulation position, and, when actuated, releases the articulation joint into its freely articulating state to permit free articulation of the end effector dependent upon external forces acting upon the end effector.

摘要： A method for operating a surgical end effector, includes articulatingly connecting a control handle to the end effector and positioning an articulation joint actuator of the handle to selectively connect with an articulation lock of the end effector such that, when unactuated, the articulation joint actuator automatically connects with the articulation lock to lock the articulation lock and temporarily prevent further articulating motion of the end effector and, when actuated, the articulation joint actuator is removed from the articulation lock to unlock the articulation lock and, thereby, permit articulating motion of the end effector dependent upon external forces acting upon the end effector. The articulation joint actuator is actuated to unlock the articulation lock and the end effector is contacted with the environment to passively articulate the end effector into a desired articulated position. Removal of actuation locks the articulation lock and retains the end effector in the desired articulated position.
