    • An EL element includes a) an outer connecting part, b) a substrate comprising a light-transmitting and insulating sheet, c) a light-transmitting electrode layer formed on the substrate wholly or except the outer connecting part in a specific pattern, d) a light emitting layer formed on the light-transmitting electrode layer in a specific pattern, e) a dielectric layer formed on the light emitting layer in a specific pattern, f) a backside electrode layer formed on the dielectric layer in a specific pattern, g) an insulating layer formed on the backside electrode layer and the light-transmitting electrode layer except the outer connecting part, and h) a shielding layer formed on the insulating layer in a specific pattern. The light-transmitting electrode layer or the backside electrode layer is coupled with the shielding layer. The EL element is thus arranged so that it can have its outer connecting part of a reduced size, and so that coupling with the electronic device becomes easy.

    • An EL element includes a light-transmitting substrate, a light-transmitting electrode layer over a first surface of the substrate, a luminescent layer over the light-transmitting electrode layer, a back electrode layer over the luminescent layer, and a waterproof insulating layer covering the light-transmitting electrode layer, the luminescent layer, and the back electrode layer. The EL element and a lighting unit have excellent resistance against water. The light-transmitting electrode layer, the luminescent layer, and the back electrode layer end before an outer periphery of the substrate as well as before an end face of the substrate at each hole or notch in the substrate. This arrangement provides the EL element and the lighting unit with the excellent resistance against water.

    • A panel switch for use in various kinds of electronic appliance comprises (1) a first wiring board having a switch contact formed on an upper surface thereof, a locating hole, and a screw hole, (2) a push button unit made of insulation resin having a frame connecting a movable key button for depressing the switch contact, and disposed on the first wiring board, and (3) a cover for covering the push button unit, having a locating hole and a threaded hole. The push button unit is provided with a locating boss on both of an upper surface and a lower surface of the frame. In assembling the panel switch, the first wiring board and the cover are aligned with respect to each other through the push button unit by inserting the locating bosses on the upper and lower surfaces of the frame into their respective locating holes in the cover and the first wiring board. The panel switch is mounted into an appliance by making a positioning alignment of the panel switch by inserting the locating boss of the frame of the push button unit protruding from the upper surface of the cover into a depression provided in an inner surface of the appliance.
