    • An adapter system is used to interface a handheld scanner to the parallel printer port of a portable computer and includes a data buffer to receive serial video data from the handheld scanner and to convert the serial video data into parallel video data. A scanner resolution latch receives scanner controller signals from the handheld scanner and provides scanning resolution data to a printer control and status bus of the printer port. A memory unit is used to store the parallel video data from the data buffer and to provide the parallel video data to the printer control and status bus. A memory controller receives the scanner controller signals and generates write signals to the memory unit so as to enable the memory unit to store the parallel video data therein. The memory controller further generates an interrupt signal at the printer control and status bus so as to inform the computer that video data is available when a predetermined quantity of the parallel video data has been stored in the memory unit.

    • Techniques described herein allow a user to create and modify a sound design in a user interface. For example, a user imports a sound file into the user interface, where the sound file is displayed graphically along a timeline. The user can then insert multiple control points along the timeline. The control points display the sound properties of the sound file at the selected points in time along the timeline. Accordingly, the user uses controls provided in the user interface to adjust and modify the sound properties displayed on a control point. The modifications the user makes to the sound properties are saved to the sound file.

    • A lost scan line detecting device provides lost scan line information to a computer system which is connected to and which receives scan line picture data from a handheld scanner, thereby enabling the computer system to derive picture data which corresponds to a lost scan line from available scan line picture data. The handheld scanner generates a series of photo receiver pulses and a series of step trigger signals. Each of the photo receiver pulses is used to indicate that the handheld scanner has traveled by a distance which is equivalent to one scan line on a document being scanned. The handheld scanner generates each of the step trigger signals after one of the photo receiver pulses has been generated. The period between two step trigger signals is constant and corresponds to a predetermined maximum scanning speed of the handheld scanner. The lost scan line detecting device includes a first counter to count the photo receiver pulses and a second counter to count the step trigger signals. The count outputs of the first and second counters are compared, and a lost scan line signal is generated whenever the count outputs are unequal so as to indicate to the computer system that a lost scan line condition has occurred.

    • A media application for providing outputs (e.g., audio outputs) in response to inputs received from an input device is provided. The media application may connect input mechanisms of an input device with parameters of channel strips (e.g., which may define output sounds) using an intermediate screen object. The media application may first assign an input mechanism to a screen object, and separately map a screen object to a channel strip parameter. The media application may map a screen object to several channel strips simultaneously such that, based on the value of the screen object, the volume of each of the several channel strips changes. The media application may provide a graphical representation of available channel strips using layers. As the media application accesses a channel strip, the appearance of the portion of the layer associated with the channel strip may change. The media application may also allow the patches, which may include several channel strips, to survive after a new patch is selected instead.

    • One or more computers are programmed to obtain an identifier of a natural language (“session language”). Additionally, the one or more computers are programmed to create and store in a computer memory, a webpage to be displayed to the user, including at least a title of a piece of content. In addition, the one or more computers automatically use the language identifier to select from among multiple tags that are expressed in multiple languages, a set of tags in the session language. One or more tags in the selected set are then stored in the web page in the computer memory, if the selected set is non-zero. If the number of tags in the selected set is zero (i.e. there exist no tags in the session language), in some embodiments a message is included in the webpage, indicating that there are no tags available.

    • A method and system for measuring optical scattering characteristics includes coupling a continuous wave laser excitation signal to an optical fiber. Radiation backscattered by the optical fiber in response to the coupled excitation signal is detected to produce a backscattered radiation signal. The backscattered radiation signal is mixed with the excitation signal to produce a mixed signal. The mixed signal is filtered to reduce the magnitude of frequencies other than conjugate mixing frequencies relative to the conjugate mixing frequencies. The filtered signal is digitized and the magnitude of backscattered radiation from a specific portion of the fiber is calculated based on the digitized signal. The temperature of a specific portion of the fiber can be determined from the magnitude of the backscattered radiation.
