    • PURPOSE: A method for preparing a glass rod and its apparatus are provided, to obtain a preform whose diameter hardly changes, and thereby making an optical fiber whose diameter hardly changes. CONSTITUTION: The method comprises the steps of adjusting the vertical inclination of a standard rod having a predetermined straightness; and heating and elongating a base material which is a parent material of the glass rod, along an axis of the standard rod to obtain a glass rod. Preferably the system of the optical fiber manufacturing apparatus comprises a glass base material making apparatus(600) which produces a glass base material(102); a dehydration and sintering apparatus(700) which dehydrates and sinters the glass base material(102); a first-stage elongation apparatus(900) which elongates the glass base material to produce a glass rod(106); a delivery apparatus(380) which delivers the glass rod(106); a second-stage elongation apparatus(111) which elongates the glass rod(106) to produce a preform(107); and a drawing apparatus(500) which draws the preform(107) to produce an optical fiber.
