    • An apparatus for treating food waste is provided to suppress the generation of odor and facilitate treatment and discharge of the food waste, by stirring, crushing, heating, and drying the food waste within a drying cylinder. A housing member(1) has a cylinder-shaped drying unit(2). A lid is installed at an upper end of the drying unit. A drying cylinder(10) is detachably inserted into the drying unit of the housing member, and inclinedly disposed within the drying unit. A crush and stir wing(20) is installed at a lower end of the drying cylinder to crush and stir food waste. A transfer guide is installed on an inner circumference of the drying cylinder to transfer the food waste. A driving unit(40) rotates the drying cylinder and the crush and stir wing so that the food waste is crushed and stirred within the drying cylinder. A heating unit heats and dries the food waste within the drying cylinder.

The preconditioner (10, 70, 102) is particularly useful for the preconditioning and partial gelatinization of starch-bearing feed or food materials, to an extent to achieve at least about 50% cook in the preconditioned feed or food materials.
