    • PURPOSE: A magnetic recording medium and a magnetic recording apparatus are provided to keep the exchange coupling energy of the recording layer high even when the exchange coupling strength control layer is formed thick, thereby improving perpendicular magnetic recording characteristic. CONSTITUTION: A magnetic recording medium comprises a substrate, a soft magnetic support layer, an intermediate layer, a first recording layer, an exchange coupling strength control layer, and a second recording layer successively laminated. The first recording layer has perpendicular magnetic anisotropy. The exchange coupling strength control layer is made of a granular material obtained by adding an oxide to metal including ruthenium(Ru). The second recording layer has perpendicular magnetic anisotropy and is ferromagnetically coupled with the first recording layer through the exchange coupling strength control layer.
