    • PURPOSE: A control device for electric vehicles is provided to convert modes only when needed by limiting the mode conversion only during the vehicle is stopped and simplifying the operation. CONSTITUTION: A control device for electric vehicles comprises a mode switch(49), a mode discriminating unit(83) and a driving unit(81). The mode switch is installed separately from an excel operation tool. The mode switch selects between a normal mode and a backward mode. The mode discriminating unit has a throttle opening ratio of zero. The mode discriminating unit premises that the car speed(V) is zero. The mode discriminating unit distinguishes that the backward mode is selected by the mode switch. If the backward mode is selected by the mode discriminating unit, the driving part provides the low speed backward command decided within the low speed range to a motor(18). The low speed range sets the lower car speed than the maximum speed in the normal mode as the maximum speed.
