    • A method for modifying the surface of an activated carbon is provided to increase the adsorption performance of the harmful substances included in the cigarette smoke. An active carbon is immersed into a treatment solution containing the nitric acid with a low concentration of 0.01-0.05M as an oxidizing agent or a treatment solution containing the nitric acid with a low concentration of 0.01-0.05M as an oxidizing agent and the sulfuric acid with a concentration of 0.001-1.0M as an inorganic acid. Thereafter, the active carbon is reacted at 50-100 degrees in centigrade for 1-72 hours. The reacted active carbon is washed by the distilled water and dried at 80-150 degrees in centigrade so that the functional group is introduced to the surface of the active carbon. Thereafter, the active carbon is oxidized at 300-500 degrees in centigrade for 0.5-4 hours so that the functional group is converted.
