A first code value and a k-bit value are received from an authentication system using the k-bit value, a first sharing secret key, and a predetermined one bit value(303). When the first code value is identical to the second code value, a first response value is generated using the k-bit value and a second sharing secret key(306). When the first code value is not identical to the second code value, a second response value is generated using the k-bit value and a third sharing secret key(307). The first or second response value is transmitted to the authentication system(308).
