    • PURPOSE: Provided is a method for separating cerium oxide(CeO2) from waste ferric oxide(Fe2O3) used as a catalyst in production of a styrene monomer. Also, the separation method can recycle magnetite(Fe3O4). CONSTITUTION: The separation method of CeO2 comprises the steps of: (i) wet ball-milling waste Fe2O3 catalyst to a size of 0.1-5.0micrometer with an iron ball mill; (ii) dissolving ground catalyst into strong acids(HCl, H2SO4) to remove alkali(K2O) or alkali earth metal(CaO, MgO) compound; (iii) filtering to get F2O3 particles; (iv) adding water to the remained Fe2O3 to be a ratio of Fe2O3/water of 20-500g/L, HCl or NaOH to adjust the pH of the F2O3-contained solution in the range of pH3-12, and 0.1-5wt.%(based on the total amount Fe2O3 catalyst) of dispersant such as polyvinyl pyrrolidone, polyacrylic acid, polycarboxylic acid, etc.; (v) magnetic stirring to separate into magnetite(Fe3O4) and cerium oxide(CeO2) layers; (vi) separating white-colored CeO2 and black-colored Fe3O4.
