    • A bond coat attachable well to the substrate is provided to obtain minimal reaction and interdiffusion in addition to its role of protecting a substrate from oxidation and corrosion. A coating consists essentially of: about 5 to about 10 wt.% of aluminum; about 10 to about 18 wt.% of cobalt; about 4 to about 8 wt.% of chromium; about 0 to about 1 wt.% of hafnium; about 0 to about 1 wt.% of silicon; about 0 to about 1 percent of yttrium; about 1.5 to about 2.5 wt.% of molybdenum; about 2 to about 4 wt.% of rhenium; about 5 to about 10 wt.% of tantalum; about 5 to about 8 wt.% of tungsten; about 0 to about 1 wt.% of zirconium; and the balance of nickel. A component comprises a superalloy matrix(14), and a bond coat(18) covering at least a portion of the superalloy matrix, the bond coat consisting essentially of: about 5 to about 10 wt.% of aluminum; about 10 to about 18 wt.% of cobalt; about 4 to about 8 wt.% of chromium; about 0 to about 1 wt.% of hafnium; about 0 to about 1 wt.% of silicon; about 0 to about 1 percent of yttrium; about 1.5 to about 2.5 wt.% of molybdenum; about 2 to about 4 wt.% of rhenium; about 5 to about 10 wt.% of tantalum; about 5 to about 8 wt.% of tungsten; about 0 to about 1 wt.% of zirconium; and the balance of nickel. The component further comprises a thermal barrier coating(20) covering at least a portion of the bond coat, wherein the thermal barrier coating is selected from a group consisting of zirconia stabilized with yttria, zirconia stabilized with gadolinia, zirconia stabilized with ceria, zirconia stabilized with scandia, and combinations thereof.

    • A thermal barrier coating which can be applied to a turbine engine component, and in which a yttria-stabilized zirconia layer and a molten silicate resistant layer are alternately deposited, a method for forming the thermal barrier coating, and a turbine engine component having the thermal barrier coating are provided. A thermal barrier coating system(18) comprises: a first yttria-stabilized zirconia layer(10); a first molten silicate resistant material layer(20) deposited onto the first yttria-stabilized zirconia layer; a second yttria-stabilized zirconia layer(22) deposited onto the first molten silicate resistant material layer; and a second molten silicate resistant material layer(24) deposited onto the second yttria-stabilized material layer. The thermal barrier coating system further comprises at least one additional yttria-stabilized zirconia layer and at least one additional molten silicate resistant material layer. The molten silicate resistant material comprises at least one oxide of a material selected from the group consisting of lanthanum, cerium, praseodymium, neodymium, promethium, samarium, europium, gadolinium, terbium, dysprosium, holmium, erbium, thulium, ytterbium, lutetium, scandium, indium, zirconium, hafnium, and titanium. The molten silicate resistant material comprises a gadolinia-stabilized zirconia. The gadolinia-stabilized zirconia consists of 25 to 99.9 wt.% of gadolinia and the balance of zirconia.

    • A coating system which reduces sand related distress on turbine engine components, and comprises a yttria-stabilized zirconia layer and a molten silicate resistant outer layer, a turbine engine component comprising a substrate, a yttria-stabilized zirconia coating applied onto the substrate, and a molten silicate resistant outer layer, and a method for forming the coating system are provided. A coating system(18) comprises: a yttria-stabilized zirconia layer(10); and a molten silicate resistant outer layer(20). The outer layer consists of an oxide selected from the group consisting of lanthanum, cerium, praseodymium, neodymium, promethium, samarium, europium, gadolinium, terbium, dysprosium, holmium, erbium, thulium, ytterbium, lutetium, scandium, indium, zirconium, hafnium, titanium, and mixtures thereof. The outer layer is formed from a gadolinia-stabilized zirconia. The gadolinia-stabilized zirconia consists of 25 to 99.9 wt.% of gadolinia and the balance of zirconia. The yttria-stabilized zirconia layer consists of 4.0 to 25 wt.% of yttria and the balance of zirconia. The molten silicate resistant outer layer consists of a first material selected from the group consisting of zirconia, hafnia, and titania, and a stabilizing element comprising at least one oxide selected from the group consisting of lanthanum, cerium, praseodymium, neodymium, promethium, samarium, europium, gadolinium, terbium, dysprosium, holmium, erbium, thulium, ytterbium, lutetium, scandium, and indium.
