    • PURPOSE: Provided are a simple method and apparatus for concentrating a sterilizer such as hydrogen peroxide, and sterilizing an article such as a medical instrument by using the concentrated sterilizer. CONSTITUTION: The method for sterilizing an article comprises the steps of: placing the article into a chamber(30) containing an inner atmosphere; introducing a solution comprising hydrogen peroxide and water into a vaporizer(36) communicated with the chamber through a port; pumping a portion of the inner atmosphere from the chamber(30) through the port to reduce the pressures in the chamber(30) and in the vaporizer(36); vaporizing water vapor from the solution; discharging the water vapor from the vaporizer(36) to increase the ratio of hydrogen peroxide to water in the vaporizer(36); terminating the pumping step while the vaporizing step is not terminated; vaporizing hydrogen peroxide vapor from the solution and flowing the hydrogen peroxide vapor from the vaporizer(36) into the chamber(30); and contacting the article with the hydrogen peroxide vapor for a time sufficient to sterilize the article.

CONSTITUTION: The method of determining the presence of a point of interest of an aldehyde in a test sample comprises the steps of: reacting the aldehyde in the test sample with an amount of a compound that reacts with a carbonyl group of the aldehyde in a first reacting step, wherein the amount is sufficient to react with the aldehyde to the point of interest to produce a first color; reacting a compound having an amino group with any remaining aldehyde in the test sample in a second reacting step, the compound being one that reacts with the aldehyde to produce a second color; and determining the presence of an excess of aldehyde in the test sample to the point of interest by observation of a final color of the test sample.
