    • PURPOSE: A micro-structured optical fiber having sub-medium regions, an optical fiber ribbon, an optical fiber array, an optical connector, and an optical connection element are provided to reduce the bending loss of a fundamental mode by improving an optical characteristic of an optical fiber. CONSTITUTION: An optical fiber includes a core(2), an inner cladding(3) surrounding the core, and an outer cladding(4) surrounding the inner cladding. The core is a first main medium having a refractive index of n1 at a wavelength lambda between 200 nm and 1700 nm. The inner cladding includes a second main medium region(5) having a refractive index of n2 lower than n1 at the wavelength lambda, and a plurality of sub medium(6) regions having refractive index of n3 lower than n2 at the wavelength lambda. The outer cladding is a third main medium(8) having a refractive index of n4 higher than an average refractive index N of the inner cladding at the wavelength lambda. The core, the inner cladding, the outer cladding and the sub medium regions extend along a fiber axis. A bending loss of a fundamental mode of the fiber at a wavelength lambda is lower than 0.1 dB/m at a bending diameter of 15mm. A bending loss of a first higher-order mode at the wavelength lambda is higher than 1 dB/m at a bending diameter of 30mm.
