    • PURPOSE: To improve utilization efficiency of light by enlarging effective numerical aperture without bringing about size increase of constitution and manufacturing difficulty. CONSTITUTION: A liquid crystal display element is provided with a liquid crystal layer 45, a pixel electrode part 46 having plural pixel openings 46A through which light can pass and at least one micro-lens array 42 in which plural microlenses 42M are two-dimensionally arranged and formed corresponding to the plural pixel openings. Each microlens contains a condensing lens which has at least one lens surface R1 in an optical axis direction and functions so as to converge incident beams at a pixel opening side and a field lens which has at lest one lens surface R2 in the optical axis direction and is constituted so that a focus position nearly coincides with a principal point position of the condensing lens. A synthesized focus position of the condensing lens and the field lens is constituted by being shifted from the pixel opening and shift quantity is set so that the effective numerical aperture is higher than that when the synthesized focus position coincides with the pixel opening 46A.

The light emitted from the light emitting layer is reflected and is emitted from the second surface of the transparent upper substrate.
