    • PURPOSE: Video encoding apparatus and a method thereof, and video decoding apparatus and a method thereof are provided to selectively use the discrete cosine transform-based interpolation filter (DCT-IF) and the discrete sine transform-based interpolation filter (DST-IF), thereby maximizing the compression of video in encoding. CONSTITUTION: A prediction unit (100) selects either DCT-IF or DST-IF based on rate distortion costs (RDC) and generates a predicted block of a current block using the selected IF. A first subtractor (110) subtracts the predicted block from the current block to generate a first residual block. A transformation unit (120) generates a frequency conversion block with the conversion of the first residual block. A quantization unit (130) quantizes the frequency conversion block. A bit stream generator (140) encodes information about the selected interpolation filter and the quantized frequency conversion block into bit stream.     • A lossless encoding and decoding method of a moving picture and an apparatus thereof are provided to calculate the difference between pixels of the inside of a residual block by the inter prediction result and to code formed differential residual blocks. A prediction about an input image is performed with a predetermined block size and then a prediction block corresponding to the present block for coding is produced. A residual block consisting of residual signals corresponding to the difference between the pixels of the prediction block and the pixels corresponding to the present block is produced(720). The difference value between the residual signals for constructing the residual block is calculated according to the predetermined direction and the differential residual block is produced on the basis of the calculated difference value. Thereafter, the entropy coding of the differential residual block is performed(730).
