    • A novel enzyme, sphingosine 1-O-methyltransferase, is provided to activate the transfer of methyl group to hydroxyl group and perform critical regulation in diseases related to 1-O-methyl-spingosine. A spingosine 1-O-methyltransferase has enzyme activity according to the chemical equation 1. The spingosine 1-O-methyltransferase induces O-methylation by converting methyl group to C1 hydroxy group of spingosine using S-adenocyl-L-methionine(SAM) as a methyl supply source. The spingosine 1-O-methyltransferase is derived from a kidney or liver tissue of rat and has optimal enzyme activity in reacting with spingosine for 60 minutes. The spingosine 1-O-methyltransferase suppresses the enzyme activity by Zn but does not suppress the enzyme activity by other metal such as Mg, Ca, Co, and Ni.
