    • PURPOSE: A process for preparing a carboxylic acid from an alkane is provided to prepare efficiently and economically a carboxylic acid from an alkane using a soft oxidizer and selective hydrogen combustion. CONSTITUTION: A process for preparing unsaturated carboxylic acids or unsaturated nitriles from an corresponding C2-C4 alkane comprises the steps of: converting C2-C4 alkane(10) into C2-C4 alkene corresponding to C2-C4 alkane to generate an intermediate product gas(16) including at least corresponding C2-C4 alkene and hydrogen; converting at least some hydrogen within the intermediate product gas into water to generate an accumulated product gas(22) including the corresponding C2-C4 alkene, water, carbon dioxide, and heat; recovering partial heat from the accumulated product gas and then supplying recovered heat to an endoergic reaction region(14); oxidizing C2-C4 alkene of the cooled accumulated product gas to generate an oxidized product stream(26) containing the corresponding unsaturated carboxylic acids or nitriles; separating the oxidized product stream to form an aqueous oxidixed product stream including the corresponding unsaturated carboxylic acid or nitrile, and a gas stream including unreacted C2-C4 alkane and carbon dioxide; drying the gas stream and then separating the unreacted C2-C4 alkane and carbon dioxide from the dried gas stream; and recirculating the separated unreacted C2-C4 alkane and carbon dioxide to the first step.
