    • PURPOSE: Apparatus and method for preliminary discharging slit coater are provided to prevent washing solution or application solution having a density different from the slit coater from being attached to the tip end of a discharge nozzle. CONSTITUTION: The preliminary discharging apparatus(P) is used at an atmosphere state before an application work and adapted to preliminary discharge an application solution contained in an application element(21) before the application work while attaching extra application solution onto a rotating roller. In such a preliminary discharge operation, a discharge port(22) of the application element is moved as close as possible to the outer peripheral surface of the roller until there is no surface tension therebetween, and the application solution from the discharge port is attached to the outer peripheral surface of the roller. During rotation of the roller, the application solution is again discharged from the roller so as to be washed and removed.

    • PURPOSE: A coating apparatus is provided, to obtain a coating having a remarkably uniform thickness, to reduce the vibration noise and to reduce the abrasion of elements owing to the non-contact between elements. CONSTITUTION: The coating apparatus comprises a base(1) provided with a table(3) where a substrate is loaded horizontally; a moving member(9) which can move via a linear motor(14) to the base; a floating means for floating the moving member to the base; an ascending/descending frame(19) supported to the moving member to allow it to ascend or descend; a coating element(21) which is set at the ascending/descending frame(19) horizontally and whose slit nozzle hole is toward the top of the table(3); and a coating solution sending pump(23) set at the moving member(9) or the ascending/descending frame(19). Preferably a pair of linear motors(14) and a pair of floating means are arranged along the moving direction of the moving means. The moving member is risen from the base by discharging air through an open hole of an air bearing(10), the current is applied to the coil(16) of the linear motor, and the coating solution is supplied from the slit nozzle hole with moving the moving member along the rail with non-contact to the rail.
