    • There are provided an optical module in which an assembling process of its optical coupling part can be simplified, and a method of assembling the optical module. After a surface light receiving type (12) or a surface light emitting type optical element (12) has been mounted on a substrate (13), an optical fiber array (18) is mounted to the substrate (13) with a spacer (17) or spacers (17) interposed between the substrate (13) and the optical fiber array (18). The optical fiber array (18) is mounted and fixed to the substrate (13) with the spacer (17) or spacers (17) interposed therebetween while alignment between a plurality of light receiving elements (12) or light emitting elements (12) and the end surfaces of a plurality of optical fibers of the optical fiber array (18) is being carried out by image recognition thereof.

    • PURPOSE: To provide a structure and a method that enable an optical module to be easily mounted without alignment. CONSTITUTION: A surface light-receiving and emitting type optical element 11 is mounted on a substrate 13, on which a fiber array 18 with a guide hole connectable to a guide pin-attached optical connector is mounted through a spacer. The light receiving part (receiving/emitting part) 12 of the optical element 11 and the fiber 22 end face of the fiber array 18, which are opposite to each other, are aligned through a picture recognizing system. There is no need of installing a high-precision marker on the substrate 13 as conventionally done. High precision for mounting is needed only for one process of mounting the fiber array 18.
