    • A method and a system for transmitting and receiving signals using multiple frequency bands in a wireless communication system are provided to transmit and receive mass data by assisting an MS(Mobile Station) to use a plurality of FAs(Frequency Assignments) in a wireless communication system. An MS acquires synchronization with a BS(Base Station) through a specific FA(201). The BS and the MS execute initial ranging through the exchange of ranging messages(203). The MS transmits an SBC-REQ(Subscriber Basic Capability Request) message to the BS(205). In this case, the SBC-REQ message contains information about whether the MS supports overlay mode and information about the maximum number of usable FAs when the MS supports overlay mode. In response to the SBC-REQ request, the BS transmits an SBC-RSP(SBC Response) message to the MS(207). In this case, the SBC-RSP message contains information about whether the BS supports overlay mode and information about the number of FAs to be provided when the BS supports overlay mode. Afterwards, the BS executes authentication and registration procedures with the MS(209,211).

    • A ranging device in a wireless access communication system and a method therefor are provided to allocate ranging resources variably according to ranging loads, thereby increasing a probability of ranging success. A controller(310) decides on retransmission frequency of a random access code. A code generator selects a code set in accordance with the retransmission frequency, and selects one random code within the selected code set to output the selected code. A transmitter(314) transmits the random access code of the code generator through previously allocated resources. The random access code is a code for ranging. The controller obtains window size for backoff and a resource area for transmitting the random access code from a predetermined message received from a base station.

    • An apparatus and a method for setting a paging group in a broadband wireless communication system are provided to set the paging group in consideration of movement of a terminal, thereby reducing unnecessary data flows caused by the paging and preventing iterative paging performance caused by a paging fail. A call managing unit(205) outputs handover generation information of a terminal to a controller. A storage(207) stores paging group setup information by terminal. The controller(201) determines a paging group size of the terminal by using a handover generation frequency, and updates the setup information stored in the storage.
