    • Novel heteropolysaccharides and their derivs. have the following characterisation: mol. wt. 2-6 x 106 daltons; UV spectrum:-nonucleic acid; 2-10% protein (Lowry process); constituents:-carbohydrate (20-40% glucose; 30-50% galactose; 20-35% mannose); 2-10% protein; 5-15% organic acid (pyruvic: uronic: acetic = 4:8:1) and 5-30% ash; consistency index (K): 15000-20000 mPas for a 1% soln. Pref. derivs. are acetyl, carboxymethoxy, propylene glycol ester, cationic derivs. and hydroxypropylene. The polysaccharides are produced by culture of a Methylbacterium organophilum strain or its mutants on a culture medium contg. a source of C and energy, a source of N such as NH4 salts, nitrates, urea, a yeast extract, peplone and a casaminated acid phosphates, Mg and oligo elements.
