The valve overlap is fixed to the maximum valve overlap in case of the valve overlap to be over the maximum valve overlap(S7).

CONSTITUTION: A vehicle operational state detecting element(100) detects a change in operational state of a vehicle. An ECU(Electronic Control Unit,200) receives an RPM(Rotations Per Minute) of an engine, opening of a throttle valve, speed, a water temperature, and a state of a floor switch. The ECU judges the state of the floor switch in the case that the engine has a partial load. If the floor switch is on a contact point, the frequency of contact point on-states is accumulated. If the accumulated frequency is more than a first set value, it is judged that the engine is damaged, and the ECU outputs a predetermined warning signal.
