    • A backlight (1) is constructed by connecting U-shaped discharge lamps (2A,2B) to the connector (6A) of a discharge lamp lighting circuit (5). A secondary side output voltage of a transformer (T1B) is applied to the other ends of the U-shaped discharge lamps (2A,2B) via the respective ones of power supplying electrodes (4B,4C). The secondary side output voltages of the transformers (T1A,T1C) have the same polarity, while the secondary side output voltage of the transformer (T1B) has the opposite polarity thereto.
