    • PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an improved method for feeding cellulose chips to a high pressure continuous cooking system.
      SOLUTION: Provided is a method for feeding a cellulosic fibrous material to a high pressure processing vessel including, (a) a step of pressurizing a low pressure flow of the fibrous material by a transfer device, (b) a step of discharging a high pressure flow of the fibrous material from the transfer device to a pressure conduit in fluid communication with the processing vessel, (c) a step of extracting fluid from a slurry of the fibrous material and fluid in the high pressure processing vessel, (d) a step of introducing a first portion of the extracted fluid to a high-pressure inlet of the transfer device, and (e) a step of introducing a second portion of the extracted fluid to a low pressure flow of the fibrous material on the upstream of transfer device.

      SOLUTION: A cellulose slurry treatment system comprises an upright continuous digester 11 having an inlet near the top and an outlet near the bottom; a feed system 12 for the digester including a slurry pump; a yield or strength-enhancing additive conduit for introducing a yield or strength-enhancing additive into the slurry before the slurry pump; a top treatment zone of the cooker, a screen assembly near the bottom of the top treatment zone and a cooking zone 29 below the screen assembly; the screen assembly providing a temperature transition in the digester; means for introducing or re-circulating liquids into the digester so as to establish upward flow of liquid in the digester above the screen, and means for introducing the yield or strength-enhancing additive to the top zone and/or the feed system of the digester.
