For updating judgment reference values for respective denominations to optimum values, the judgement reference value of a specified denomination such as a frequently used denomination or a most inexpensive denomination in the judgment reference values of the respective denominations is updated by statistically processing the detection signal of the denomination so as to correspond to the change over aging in the sensors S1 and S2. The judgment reference value of a denomination except for a specified denomination is updated based on the update value of the specified denomination by subtracting a prescribed difference from the update value of the specified denomination.
