    • PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To enable the use of a projector for an illumination device in wide variety.SOLUTION: The projector comprises: a light source part 16; input systems (11 to 13) that input an image signal; projection systems (14, 15, and 17 to 19) that form and project an optical image according to the input image signal by using light from the light source part, and include a projection lens part 18 capable of adjusting a projection angle of view and focus; an image storage section 31A for illumination, which stores an image signal for illumination; photographing systems (20 to 24) that measure the distance of a projection object; and a CPU 29 that selectively sets, according to an operation in an operation section 32, a projection mode for forming and projecting the optical image according to the input image signal or an illumination mode for illumination by using light from the light source part, reads the image signal for illumination from the image storage section for illumination when the illumination mode is set, replaces it with the image signal input by the input systems to project an optical image by the projection systems according to it, and adjusts the projection lens part of the projection systems to a different state during the projection mode on the basis of the distance of the projection object obtained by the photographing systems.
