The IR cutting filter 4a is a filter which is used for a video camera mounted with a mechanical iris system before. The IR cutting coating layer 4b is formed by laminating 16 layers of IR cutting coatings having an infrared-light cutting function with a 630±50 nm half-value.

The chamber 34 receives a fluid 42 for filter-treating part of the radiation 22. By absorbing the rain of unnecessary wavelengths, a filter treated radiation 44 is generated.

At this time, preferably, the hydrochloric acid has a 5 to 20% hydrogen chloride concn. and the ammonium hydroxide aq. solution has a 0.1 to 20% ammonium hydroxide concn. Thus, the obstructive ultraviolet rays in the region of the shorter wavelength side than about 210nm can be cut and the useful ultraviolet rays in the wavelength region from about 212 to 222nm can be transmitted.

A control signal is generated for pixels exceeding a threshold, and the picture signal from the sensor 33 is attenuated with prescribed differences in accordance with this control signal by a programmable attenuator 48. Thus, the intensity of the picture obtained by image pickup is kept within a processing range without reducing the resolution of the picture even if this intensity exceeds the processing range where the picture can be processed in, for example, a television broadcast system.
